Depressed? Anxious and overwhelmed? Does confusion or disconnect cause behaviours that impede your relationships and quality of life? You may be feeling 'stuck' and not know why, shutdown in parts of your life you once thrived in or experiencing things in life that are triggering. You are not alone. When working with Nikki you will find a gentle, non-judgemental approach to the human experience. Connect with Nikki by Telehealth or in person to curiously explore attachment and development across your lifespan and the narrative and beliefs they create that can block your healing.

Nearly all of us have challenges in life. Perhaps some of the most difficult for us to adjust to are those concerning our intimate relationships, and sexuality. Relationship problems and problems with sex are two of the most common issues that people bring to counselling with me... these aspects of life frequently result in much distress within each of us, and much conflict if you're in a relationship. Let's face it, it's not easy talking about relationship problems and sex when we're already feeling distressed.

Is life different from how you expected it to be? Do you experience feelings of loss, overwhelm, or being judged at times? You are not alone. Everyone feels like this at some point in their lives. I have too, and have built a career on supporting people just like us to navigate the challenges. Personally I have experienced pregnancy loss, post-natal depression, anxiety, depression and the joys and challenges of parenthood. I can walk with you on the journey of being a mother - a biological, step, adopted, foster, or a mother with a different name - across the lifespan.

Complex trauma at any age can make understanding ourselves, our reactions, painful emotions, and relationships mystifying. I'm registered with Blue Knot Foundation as a trauma informed therapist. If you have anxiety or depression symptoms, anger or hurt, I have been working beside people who want to manage and reduce these issues since the 20th century. I'll do my best to give you tools to use right from your first visit. If you are in a remote area I can provide sessions via Signal/Skype/Zoom. I know a lot about family and domestic violence and how people can come back from what happened to them or even what they did to others.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
