Play is therapeutic and a powerful means for the changes and healing you so long to see in your child and your family.
Somewhere along the way, there has been a rupture between you and your child. You are constantly overwhelmed by their BIG emotions and behaviours, and you are doing your best to respond differently from your default parenting patterns. Maybe they've been through something big. You desire a stronger, more secure and trusting relationship with your child. You dream of fostering co-operation and harmonious sibling (and peer) relationships. Your really want to support them in their growth, development and wellbeing.

I have a particular focus on helping people find a healthy balance to life through incorporating a holistic approach—exploring the connection between our mind, body and spirit; family dynamics and how our childhood and home environment play a role in who we are today; the importance of self-awareness/self-compassion & gaining insight into our core beliefs.
I enjoy establishing an authentic relationship by means of an unconventional therapeutic process, particularly when working with young people. I provide a compassionate and insightful approach to therapy as I journey with my clients through a variety of challenges they may face. Our life experience, positive or negative, are building blocks for who we are today and can be effective tools in creating who we aspire to be tomorrow. I believe that with the right tools, empathic support, and personal determination, we can live life with confidence and become the best version of ourselves.

I have had the opportunity to work across a range of settings, including public & private hospitals, outpatient drug and alcohol, family violence and private practice.
I am a Psychologist and PhD (Clinical Psychology) Candidate at the University of Wollongong. I work with people from medium to long-term, depending on their needs to address a range of difficulties including anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, anger and issues with identity. I adopt an exploratory and curious approach to help people understand themselves and their behavioural patterns. I use a combination of skills based approaches (cognitive behaviour therapy and acceptance based approaches) and deeper approaches (e.g., attachment, schema and psychodynamic approaches) in my work to make therapy meaningful and practical.

My clinical expertise has been developed in various clinical settings; for the last 20 years I developed evidence-based clinical skills aimed to improve measurable treatment outcomes for individuals aged 18+ experiencing substance misuse issues/and co-morbidity issues, including mood/anxiety/personality disorders, family/parenting/relationship issues.
Seeking help from a psychologist could be overwhelming and stressful. It may be seen as a sign of weakness or suggest that there is something wrong with the person. My professional aim is to assist the person seeking help in a collaborative, compassionate and authentic manner, in a therapeutic space where personal issues are viewed as opportunities to discover personal strengths, to foster personal growth and improve quality of life. I am deeply committed to empower individuals in overcoming the social stigma associated with mental health issues and I value each person’s uniqueness during their engagement in mental health recovery.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
