Since starting my career in psychology in 2008, I have enjoyed worked with adults of all ages. Some of the issues that have been brought to therapy include interpersonal issues, family conflict, career/workplace issues, academic/study problems, grief, struggles with mood, motivation, identity, values and life transition. My clients come from all walks of life: tradies and warehouse personnel, students, retirees, teachers, fellow health professionals, stay-at-home moms, career women, new migrants, second generation Australians - all of who are just trying to navigate what mental health means to them and what they want out of life.

Senior leaders, busy professionals and creative entrepreneurs need to manage an unprecedented range of competing demands across their personal and professional lives. The pressure can be relentless, and career success can come at a high cost. Stress can have serious impacts on mental health, family relationships and physical well-being. Travel and work schedules can undermine marriages/partnerships and parenting. It makes sense to invest in your resilience, wellbeing and self care because resilient leaders achieve more.

Something isn’t quite right. It may be that you can’t stop yourself from worrying. Or you are compulsively avoiding things (places, people, certain situations). Perhaps you find yourself flying into a sudden, uncontrollable, panic. It may be that you are feeling down: you can’t shake the sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness in your life. You may be feeling worthless and guilty too. It could be your relationships that aren’t working (partner, friends, family, boss, or colleagues). Perhaps past experiences are haunting you so that you lose your connection to the present and the people in it. Perhaps it's all of the above.

If you are facing a challenge in your wellbeing, life, family or work place, it's so important to seek support with someone who is trained to support, equip and encourage you.
I am an experienced and warm psychologist and behaviour analyst providing effective and supportive therapy for adults and young people experiencing a range of concerns such as anxiety, stress, burnout, trauma, relationship challenges, work-related stress and mood. I believe individuals should not have to walk through life issues alone and therapy is a way to process, reflect and activate positive coping and wellbeing. You can be completely yourself in sessions. I have lots of experience working with individuals with ASD and ADHD. I also provide coaching, assertiveness training and personality assessment for professionals.

In my work I also blend EMDR, CBT, relaxation, motivational interviewing, career counselling & family therapy.
Some people struggle to manage their emotions and behaviour. Maybe they get "angry", or upset over "silly" things and they want to understand why. Other people are looking for the right mental health support, due to current or historical problems and diagnoses. I use EMDR to treat trauma from childhood, military service, sexual assault, road accidents, medical procedures and family violence. I also help many adults who have anxiety, depression or symptoms of autism, offering a safe space where distressing thoughts can be explored safely, respectfully and with a dash of humour. I am also available to attend critical incident sites.

My interest ranges within various mental health issues, including those mood-related, such as depression and anxiety, and those associated with personality disorders, particularly Borderline and Narcissistic presentations. I encourage my clients to build a collaborative therapeutic relationship, where the client has the central role, and my role is to help them create a life worth living. This process often includes identifying family dynamics/early experiences that lead to unhelpful beliefs and patterns of behavior, accepting what cannot be changed and embracing the process of making changes to commit to a more meaningful life.

Who we are is shaped by so many things around us and I hope to support you in making sense of your unique identity and how this has been shaped by culture, race, colonial history, family history, gender and sexuality.
I'm Sanduni, a psychologist and South Asian Woman of Colour with over 10 years of experience in the mental health sector. I started Insession Counselling to provide therapy to people from all cultural backgrounds, gender identities and sexual orientations. Navigating my own experiences of marginalisation and intersectionality as a queer Sri-Lankan woman has allowed me to truly understand how culture, gender and sexuality shape so much of who we are and how we experience relationships. I combine this lived experience with evidence-based psychological interventions so that the therapy you receive is tailored specifically to you.

We are all constantly evolving and this can present difficult challenges, often impacted by family, social and cultural conditioning, religious and gender-based beliefs, roles, and biases. You might want to challenge this conditioning and these constraints. Understanding this within ourself, our relationships, and our families can be complex. You might realise that your sexual, relationship, and gender identities and preferences may be different from societal expectations, so you may struggle internally to accept who you are and your ability to live authentically. We need safe and appropriate support to navigate these changes.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
