People often see the word counsellor and have an image of two people just simply talking. Talking is a huge part of therapy; but, what I do takes it to a whole new level. I have worked with many people who spend years in therapy, yet they still carry so much anxiety and fear in their body, they see the same patterns play out time and time again. Why? Because talking doesn't always cut it. Our body is an intricate system and within it lies our stories. These stories seep out in to every part of our being and inform everything that we do; our thoughts, feelings, sensations, actions, behaviour's and interactions.

I am a Counselling Psychologist, and have experience working with clients across the lifespan. I work with adolescents, young adults and adults to help them in understanding themselves and others. Deciding to access counselling is often a big decision and it can take a while to find a psychologist that you feel safe, comfortable and at ease with, someone "who really gets you" so to speak. I am able to work with clients who are experiencing mild to acute mental health issues and have experience working in a more acute inpatient setting.

I welcome youth (16-25 years), adults and older adults, Veterans/First Responders/Health Professionals and LGBTIQ+ people. I also welcome First Nations Australians, and have trained working with First Nations Australians, particularly Whadjuk Noongar people in whose land I work and live. I do not currently see couples or family groups for counselling, and do not undertake court-ordered, family court or forensic assessments and reports as I feel these are best completed by clinicians who are specially trained in these areas.

Family Therapy Counsellors
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
