I work with individuals and couples using a range of modalities with a focus on family issues.
You used to be driven, but now you don't even recognise yourself. You feel isolated, ignored, and utterly exhausted. A newfound impatience is taking its toll on your relationship with your partner and children. Have you wondered when this began or why it is impacting you so heavily? You might have been reading about stress due to motherhood or menopause, but that doesn't mean you have to accept it. You long to retake control of your life, but you're uncertain where to begin.

Open communication and rapport is essential. However, I believe long-term outcomes and goal attainment is achieved by providing clients with a psychological toolkit per se. A variety of strategies, coping and problem-solving skills that can be implemented in the future, and generalised to various issues. It takes time to change entrenched behaviours developed in your lifespan. The therapeutic process of counselling, enables change of unwanted behaviours - using practical ways, making better life choices, one step at a time in a private and safe space.

I have worked with individuals and couples for over thirty years, helping them negotiate the struggles of life in this time of quick change, uncertainty and significant social pressure. Relationships are the first victims when people become anxious or challenged in their lives. Yet I believe relationships are the core to good mental health and personal development. These issues are relevant to people of all ages, and not specific to gender, race or religion. The presenting symptom could be grief, anxiety, depression, arguments, irritability or any form of dysfunctional behaviour - the underlying issue has to be addressed.

Sometimes making that first contact for counselling is the hardest part, but once you've made that step, you will realise that you can work at your own pace, and feel safe as you build trust in the relationship with a counsellor. Speaking with someone can help to alleviate the anxiety, and help by giving you tools, strategies, and a place to talk with someone who provides a safe, non-judgemental space. Whether you are going through relationship difficulties, struggling with anxiety, or dealing with the difficulties of living in a different country, I can be there to support you.

I specialise in working with adolescents and adults with suffering from eating disorders and body image concerns as well as addictions and substance abuse issues. I also provide support for families and partners. I want to go deeper than just providing short-term symptom relief. Often eating disorders or any addictive cycle is a coping mechanism for unresolved feelings or past trauma. My goal is to help my clients accept their feelings and also challenge limiting core beliefs in order to develop healthier coping mechanisms, better self-esteem and a life that is no longer dictated by the rules of their eating disorder or addiction .

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
