I am a Clinical Psychology Registrar, registered psychologist, and a qualified teacher, and I completed a Master's in Clinical Psychology. I can offer therapy in English and Italian and offer Medicare rebates. My work is based on evidence-based practice to ensure clients receive the best possible care. While I love to take a systemic approach with a solution-focused tinge, I believe that every therapy school ( CBT; ACT; EMDR; Psychodynamic, to name a few) has made many useful contributions; that's why I try and adopt a supportive and flexible approach using easy-going, creative, and expressive mediums to meet the individual needs.

Hey my name’s Chris, I’m a Clinical Psychologist working out of Fremantle. I work best with people who feel like things are off in life but can’t quite put their finger on what. People who feel grim even though they have a “good life” on paper. People that struggle with intense emotions which they tend to cover up with work or comfort seeking. People that feel like the past is somehow holding them back. A lot of the people I see aren’t sure why the feel the way they do, or how to feel better. Sometimes they know what to do but can’t quite put it all together. Sometimes they just want to talk and feel heard and understood.

People are most fulfilled when they have meaningful activity and connection to others both in immediate friends and the wider community. We’re happiest when we’re connected to others, connected to nature and have occupation/activity that means something to us. Every person is different and may take a different pathway towards self actualisation. I believe in meeting the client where they are and cooperatively choosing an approach to therapy. I am practical and client centred and believe good mental health starts with learning to regulate our emotions and nervous system.

I practice a unique blend of clinical and organisational psychology. My therapy sessions are conversational, personal, playful, and guiding. Therapy is about a client and a psychologist starting from an idea: That things could be better. Maybe by a lot, maybe just by a little; either way, something worth working for. Something that justifies facing challenges, shaking things up, taking some risks. As a therapist I don't pretend to know all the answers. My skill is to ask the right questions.

Behavioural Issues Counsellors

What happens in therapy for behavioural issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behaviour issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioural issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioural issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioural concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behaviour management, often used when the underlying cause of behaviour issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioural issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behaviour issues?

Studies show that therapy for behaviour issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behaviour later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behaviour. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
