My particular expertise is in working with parents, young people and children. My counselling style uses creative and expressive arts allowing children to build coping strategies, create an awareness of their body responses to stress and to help make meaning of their experiences. The outdoors may be incorporated into the session, by wandering through local parks when the weather suits.

The one constant we all share, regardless of our gender, wealth, race, location or religious beliefs is that we will spend our life in our body. This will also be one of the most confronting, challenging and potentially beautiful relationships we'll ever experience. Can we fully embrace our body? Can we come to terms with the social and cultural factors surrounding our body and, when the time comes to leave our body, will we do so with love and gratitude for how it helped us to connect with ourselves and others? Let's explore those questions together.

Every person's journey is unique, and I like to understand the background and goals of the people I support to ensure we create a personalised plan for them. I am very experienced in supporting adults, and adolescents and I have a strong interest in supporting people navigating anxiety, grief and loss, PTSD, developmental trauma, and the myriad of life's challenges. My approach is twofold: I believe in equipping you with immediate tools to cope with present concerns, while also delving into the roots of these issues – be it past events, deep-seated beliefs, or coping mechanisms – to pave the way for a brighter future.

I have over sixteen years experience in treating mental health conditions in adolescents, adults and older adults. I am trained in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). In my journey as a therapist, I found CBT was not reaching the heart of the issue for my clients and was a surface level treatment. I searched for more and found ISTDP to be a more thorough explanation of the human person, particular what causes problems and psychopathology. I use ISTDP with an attachment based lens now as my main therapeutic modality.

My therapy approach is trauma-sensitive, attachment-based and acknowledges that suppressed emotion and unresolved trauma is held in the body. Avoiding our emotions is one of the main contributors to mental health issues and my approach provides a greater understanding of our emotions and the behaviours that go with them. Our emotions organise our inner experience and avoiding them means missing out on the vital information they hold. For lasting change to occur, we must fully engage with our emotions, rather than fear them.

I utilise an attachment-based and integrative approach to therapy, drawing from a range of evidence-based modalities.
I work with adults (18+) and couples wanting to improve their mood/anxiety, relationships, and for those wanting to understand and change how their history continues to shape their relational patterns today. This may be particularly pertinent during the perinatal period (during pregnancy and postpartum). I also work with couples to prepare for and adjust to transition periods of marriage and parenthood. I believe in the wisdom of working to strengthen and bolster relationships from a place of preparation rather than waiting until things become difficult to seek support.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
