I believe we all deserve a supportive space where we can safely explore the issues that matter to us, at our own pace. I aim to facilitate that space and provide a service based on a collaborative style, where clients are active participants and can exercise their autonomy whilst enhancing their understanding of themselves, their inner, and outer world. You may be feeling stuck, anxious, or depressed, while you try to navigate your experiences. I believe that by gaining insight and self awareness you can make meaning of these experiences and find your own answers, create and achieve your goals, and reach a new beginning.

I work across the spectrum of mental health disorders but particularly specialize in Anxiety Disorders, OCD, Addiction issues, and PTSD/Trauma. I work with clients during the assessment to get an idea of what they want from life and how psychological treatment might be able to line up with their goals.

Do you wonder "what's happened to us?" Maybe you know what's happened, a betrayal for example, maybe you don't know, but things just don't feel like they used to. You might be having more arguments, feeling disconnected from each-other or resentful and hurt. Maybe you struggle to communicate without anger, or feel you can't talk about the 'big' things. Maybe you struggle with anxiety, depression or unaddressed stress that impacts your relationship. Or, maybe it is stressors outside your relationship, but is impacting it, such as in-laws or FIFO work. Whatever the cause, I imagine you just want your relationship to feel better.

People often see the word counsellor and have an image of two people just simply talking. Talking is a huge part of therapy; but, what I do takes it to a whole new level. I have worked with many people who spend years in therapy, yet they still carry so much anxiety and fear in their body, they see the same patterns play out time and time again. Why? Because talking doesn't always cut it. Our body is an intricate system and within it lies our stories. These stories seep out in to every part of our being and inform everything that we do; our thoughts, feelings, sensations, actions, behaviour's and interactions.

I don't think there really is any such thing as an ideal client... my preference is someone who wants a combination of 'offloading' to a skilled listener and provision of psychological skills/strategies to help make their situation better.

I understand that at times we all feel anxious, stuck, lost, alone or empty. Sometimes it is fleeting, sometimes it stays for a while and sometimes it seems it is never going to leave. No two people are the same and I am committed to a collaborative approach towards understanding you and find a pathway to best resolve your emotional difficulties. I draw from a range of psychological treatment approaches including Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Eye Movement Densensitisation and Reprocessing, and Internal Family Systems

I am a Counselling Psychologist, and have experience working with clients across the lifespan. I work with adolescents, young adults and adults to help them in understanding themselves and others. Deciding to access counselling is often a big decision and it can take a while to find a psychologist that you feel safe, comfortable and at ease with, someone "who really gets you" so to speak. I am able to work with clients who are experiencing mild to acute mental health issues and have experience working in a more acute inpatient setting.

My clients are the ones who are generally questioning their relationship with alcohol although not identifying as full-blown alcoholic. Most of all, my clients need a safe, non-judgemental, confidential space to talk about it and leave the shame and stigma about alcohol and addiction outside the room to talk freely. My clients are professional workers, FIFO, parents and stay-at-home parents, they are from here and from overseas. They feel tired, trapped, confused, ashamed, and very fed up to feel hangover, miserable, lonely, sometimes anxious, depressed and full of self-loathing. Like me, they may have googled "Am I an alcoholic?".

When walking alongside Clients I am passionate about the importance of believing in each individual that he/she has the capacity to find Hope, Strengths, and Reasons to live. The fact that in many cases (not all) these visions have been buried, doesn’t mean a closed door. Working through issues involves engaging a Therapist who listens, validates and acknowledges your pain with empathy and compassion and who has the insight, ability and training to equip you with skills and strategies to help guide you to move forward to a more purpose/meaningful life

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
