My hope is that I can support you to thrive, by helping you to be kind to yourself and tackle life’s obstacles. I work with a whole range of issues, from people looking for support to break old habits, recover from trauma or bullying, tackle anxiety or depression, or heal their relationship with food and body image. I am a Counselling Psychologist, and have experience working with clients across the lifespan. I work with adolescents, young adults and adults to help them in understanding themselves and others. Deciding to access counselling is often a big decision and it can take a while to find a psychologist that you feel safe, comfortable and at ease with, someone "who really gets you" so to speak. I am able to work with clients who are experiencing mild to acute mental health issues and have experience working in a more acute inpatient setting.

People often see the word counsellor and have an image of two people just simply talking. Talking is a huge part of therapy; but, what I do takes it to a whole new level. I have worked with many people who spend years in therapy, yet they still carry so much anxiety and fear in their body, they see the same patterns play out time and time again. Why? Because talking doesn't always cut it. Our body is an intricate system and within it lies our stories. These stories seep out in to every part of our being and inform everything that we do; our thoughts, feelings, sensations, actions, behaviour's and interactions.

Life can be hard and it takes courage to seek help. Everyone has their own unique history, strengths and values. What we have in common is the desire to make the most of our life. I enjoy working with adults of all ages, and provide a safe, confidential space to discuss your current challenges. These may include cancer and chronic illness, anxiety, depression, trauma, loneliness, relationship and parenting challenges, or grief. I prioritise establishing a trusting relationship and learning what you hope to gain from therapy. From there we make a plan for our work together.

My focus is client centred, and over the years I have learned a great deal about human behaviour with particular regards to depression and trauma. I focus heavily on self compassion and the defences that can stop us from moving forward. Expect a down to earth, empathic and humanistic approach when you work with me.

I pride myself on being on of the few psychologists who will help you investigate the underlying processes behind your difficulties. If you're prepared to commit to the therapeutic process to create meaningful change, then I hope you will contact me. Achieving sustainable change is not quick process, so if you're in need of immediate tools to alleviate symptoms in the short-term, I encourage you find one of the great professionals who offer more of that service. On the other hand, if you feel there are unconscious processes that you're ready to explore, my psychoanalytic approach might suit you more.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
