This work found me when I hit bottom with my lifelong struggle with food addiction, binge eating and bulimia.
We will work together on what is most important to you. Many clients are embarking on their recovery journey and are seeking relief from very acute addictive behaviours. Others are seeking longer-term psychotherapy to heal the wounds underlying those addictions. Others still, are seeking just a few sessions for specific challenges, such as a relationship break-up, bouts of anxiety or depression, or because they feel stuck in some way. And often, people don’t really know what they want and need yet, and that’s ok too. Whatever you bring, you are welcome here. Please have a look at my website for food addiction recovery group work.

Utilising current, evidence-based counselling techniques I honour all clients from a client-centred approach, as we journey together trusting the innate wisdom held within us all as a platform for healing and wellbeing. I have 11 years of socially diverse and culturally rich experience of counselling families and individuals experiencing trauma, loss, anxiety, stress, depression, addictions, OCD, major life transitions and relationship challenges. My long involvement with individuals and families, both personally and professionally, has taught me much about the struggles and challenges many of us may face.

The one constant we all share, regardless of our gender, wealth, race, location or religious beliefs is that we will spend our life in our body. This will also be one of the most confronting, challenging and potentially beautiful relationships we'll ever experience. Can we fully embrace our body? Can we come to terms with the social and cultural factors surrounding our body and, when the time comes to leave our body, will we do so with love and gratitude for how it helped us to connect with ourselves and others? Let's explore those questions together.

As a Holistic Counsellor & Psychotherapist, I help people navigate the sometimes bumpy flow of life and facilitate their process of connecting back with their own inner strengths and resources. The impacts of trauma, anxiety and overwhelm can be debilitating. Together, we dive deeper than symptom management and work with the process that's wanting to emerge, the way of life that you imagine. We find out what's in the way of this new way of being, and step onto a new path, rich with the the possibility of change.

Life doesn't always go as we plan. We can end up experiencing relationship struggles or abuse, find it difficult to get past grief and loss, find ourselves relying on substances or other addictive behaviours to get by. We may experience depression or anxiety, or wake up one morning and realise that for whatever reason, things that used to work for us are just not working anymore. We may feel exhausted or empty or disappointed and not really know why. Whether you are battling a long term problem or experiencing a new and unexpected struggle, we can support and equip you through empathetic and confidential counselling.

My name is Saskia and I am an experienced counsellor and peer worker. I've seen many therapists throughout my life, with experiences ranging from transformative to frustrating. I know that for many people the hierarchical relationship between therapist and client can be demeaning and disempowering. My practice is particularly focused on supporting those have trouble with these traditional therapeutic relationships. My approach is collaborative and informal, involving you as an equal partner in the process of therapy.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
