Hey there, I'm Valentina, the face and heart behind Soul Soothing Psychology! My passion is utilising the powerful benefits of EMDR and schema therapy with clients who are curious, reflective and recognize that painful experiences affect every aspect of their being. I believe that painful experiences can break us, leaving us with shattered fragments, and affecting our hearts, mind, body, and soul. Together, we embark on a journey towards more joy, meaningful moments, and a deeper connection to yourself and your loved ones.

I have worked with resistant and complex presentations throughout most of my career and have a huge passion for enabling recovery even in the most challenging cases. I can provide expert assessments for several areas of clinical and legal practice, and have developed several group programs to address behaviours that pose risks to the community.

Modern mothering is wild. Whether you’re just at the beginning, been at it a while or somewhere in between, the changes and challenges of mothering continue throughout our lives. You are not alone - I can help. I specialise in working with mothers who are figuring out how to find a sense of self and steadiness in this messy existence. You want to be the mother you imagined, to live your values and juggle it all. But sometimes, you fall short. We can work together towards your goals; to feel like yourself again, to be able to show up for yourself and your children, to understand, to heal and to grow.

Are you the parent of a child or adolescent with their own mental health challenges - you're busy caring for them, and feel like no one is caring for you? Are you feeling overwhelmed by rising levels of stress and anxiety in this uncertain world? Does life just feel too fast and too hard? You don't have to struggle alone. I would be privileged to walk with you awhile.

Trauma can make us feel lost, hopeless, and disconnected from ourselves and others. You might notice that you keep falling into harmful patterns. Even though you want to form meaningful relationships, you might push people away or end up in relationships that cause pain. You want to understand your reactions and feel more in control of your life. You're ready to make better choices about treating yourself and others. You want to break free from cycles of trauma and abuse. You believe there’s something better for you—you need help to find it.

Being listened to as you talk with someone you can trust helps you remember that you are not alone. It feels good to share, and talking about things can open up the door for healing. When we talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. When we try to keep things stored in our head, especially strong feelings, it gets overwhelming, which fuels our anxiety. Talking frees us from that. Together, our conversations will uncover the hidden meaning behind what's happening, and help you to find your way, as you make sense of the challenges you have found yourself facing.

You have typically strived to get the most out of life. You love a challenge and until now felt pretty satisfied with life. Things are starting to look grey. You may be going through a difficult life transition or event such as divorce, grief, retirement, facing redundancy, bullying in the workplace, career change or aging? You have lost the energy and confidence you once had and may even feel depressed and anxious at times. This is effecting your interpersonal and family relationships, health, and effectiveness at work. You feel "stuck".

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
