Yes, but...
This is true. Hopelessness, I believe, is one of the DSM criteria points for depression, so hopelessness is seen as a common symptom. What this model says, which is different than many other models, is that hopelessness is a sufficient proximal cause, that is, feeling hopeless is enough to cause depression. This is going pretty far out on a limb considering that most disorders are seen as the result of a complex confluence of vulnerabilities and stressors...
