good tips
I enjoy all of your tips and fully agree that kindness is cultivated. My only concern is the karma teaching. I think most kids suffer that unavoidable moment when they realize bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. Although the true meaning of karma is far from this simple and not a direct cause and effect, most kids understand it as such. I still remember telling mom that poor kids must be misbehaved if they are not getting gifts from santa. If they were good, thier goodness would surely be rewarded by santa. She had to have a long conversation about being kind as a personal asset regardless of a reward. Overall, the concept works but kids are sometimes extremely literal:)
Thank you
Thank you for thoughtful comments.
And I absolutely agree that introducing karma is a "slippery slope" as many parents/adults may not be comfortable or familiar with it. Plus it is (as you say) way more complex than a few sentences.
Just yesterday, I had the conversation with a 6 year old about luck. It was her direct cause and effect understanding (i.e. cheats on a test and she gets bad luck).
Ultimately, I believe Karma is an essential teaching for children although it must be taught with insight (i.e. how it works, purification practices and mindfulness).
So for many people --- it may be better to get the "right" teacher to introduce the topic to your child. Or commit to learning about it on a deeper level (for you and your child's benefit!)
