Elliot T Berkman Ph.D.

Elliot Berkman, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology, director of the Social and Affective Neuroscience lab, and co-director of the Center for Translational Neuroscience at the University of Oregon. He also directs Berkman Consultants, LLC, an expert consulting and custom research firm. The central aim of the research in Dr. Berkman’s laboratory is to understand how behavioral, motivational, and neural systems work together to help us pursue our goals. Ongoing studies in the lab seek to identify the factors that predict success at real-world goals such as quitting smoking, increasing exercise, and dieting. His research combines the distinct strengths of several research methods including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), cross-sectional and longitudinal survey methods, and laboratory experiments. He teaches courses in statistics, neuroimaging, and social psychology. His research and teaching have been recognized with the Joseph A. Gengerelli Distinguished Dissertation Award, the UCLA Social Psychology Dissertation Award, the Arthur J. Woodward Peer Mentoring Award and the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award. His book, A Conceptual Guide to Statistics Using SPSS, was co-authored with Steve Reise at UCLA and published by SAGE in 2011. He received a doctoral degree in Social Psychology from UCLA in 2010, and bachelors degrees in Psychology and Mathematics from Stanford in 2002.
