Jeremy Spiegel, MD

Jeremy Spiegel, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist who practices in New York City and Portland, Maine, is the author of the award-winning Art Healing: Visual Art for Emotional Insight and Well-Being, winner in the category Art of The USA "Best Books 2011" Awards, sponsored by USA Book News. His first book, The Mindful Medical Student: A Psychiatrist’s Guide to Staying Who You Are While Becoming Who You Want to Be (Dartmouth College Press, 2009), with a foreword by noted author and surgeon Dr. Bernie Siegel, was recently praised in a book review in the Journal of the American Medical Association (November 2009) and is currently being translated into Dutch. Dr. Spiegel graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a concentration in art and archaeology, having received both the Irma S. Seitz and Grace May Tilton prizes for his senior thesis, “Playing with Chance: Structure and Chaos in Twentieth-Century Art.” He went on to receive his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School, where he was honored for excellence in clinical psychiatry.

Dr. Spiegel has published work in general, medical, and psychiatric publications, including an article for New Therapist (January 2008) titled “The 35-Millimeter Hour: The Art of Philip-Lorca diCorcia and the Practice of Psychotherapy.” Adaptations of a chapter from The Mindful Medical Student, on dream interpretation as a tool for self-knowledge, were published in Hot Psychology (July 2007) and The New Physician (November 2007) magazines.

Additionally, Dr. Spiegel has been a regular speaker at the Creativity and Madness Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where a recent presentation (August 2009), “Naked Emotion: Exhibitionism in the Work of Three Contemporary Artists,” was enthusiastically received by nearly one thousand physicians, psychologists, and masters-level therapists. He reprised this talk as a Grand Rounds lecture at Maine’s only academic medical facility, Maine Medical Center in Portland. Dr. Spiegel gave a well-received presentation for the American Medical Student Association’s 60th Annual meeting in Anaheim, California, March 2010. He has been asked to deliver the keynote address for another AMSA conference in Providence, Rhode Island. Additionally, Dr. Spiegel is leading a two-part webinar workshop on art healing for the AMSA Humanities Scholars program.

Further, Dr. Spiegel appears regularly on a popular radio program in New York City, “The Positive Mind with Armand DiMele”(WBAI), where he discusses a wide range of topics such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, mid-life transitions, and viewing art as therapy.
