The positive recovery construct applies positive psychology, also known as the science of well-being, to the treatment of addictive disorders. The medical disease-model of treatment identifies and removes disease, but it does not promote “recovery,” which is a rich and full lifestyle that includes abstinence but is not limited to it. In “Beyond Abstinence: How to Flourish in Addiction Recovery,” Dr. Powers will explore interventions that help addicts discover purpose and meaning in their lives, build positive emotions and embark on a path to long-term sobriety.
