Gary Alan Fine

Gary Alan Fine, Ph.D., is John Evans Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow for 2010-2011. He is the author of several books on rumor, contemporary legends, and gossip including The Global Grapevine: Why Rumors of Terrorism, Immigration, and Trade Matter (with Bill Ellis) (Oxford University Press, 2010), Whispers on the Color Line: Rumor and Race in America (with Patricia Turner) (University of California Press, 2001), and Manufacturing Tales: Sex and Money in Contemporary Legends (University of Tennessee Press, 1992). He has also written extensively on political reputations, including Difficult Reputations: Collective Memories of the Evil, Inept, and Controversial (University of Chicago Press, 2001). Fine received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from HarvardUniversity.
