Connie Shapiro is a clinical social worker and a professor of family studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Women’s sexual and reproductive health has been the focus of her five books and dozens of articles, and her most recent book, When You’re Not Expecting: An Infertility Survival Guide (John Wiley & Sons), addresses the emotional issues faced by women and their partners who have difficulty becoming pregnant or who experience pregnancy losses. With examples from the hundreds of married, single and lesbian infertile clients she has counseled over the past 20 years, Shapiro uses this book to portray infertility as an uncharted journey, offering creative ideas for restoring hope and strengthening emotional resilience. Shapiro received her B.A. from Wellesley College, her M.S.W from Columbia University, and her Ph.D. from Cornell University.

When You're Not Expecting

My blog encourages emotional resilience when the path to parenthood has detours such as infertility, pregnancy loss, or lack of a male partner. Not only do I address the struggles faced by those grappling with infertility, but in addition I offer tips, techniques, and creative solutions for effectively coping with the unique challenges related to reproductive health, as well as general advice gained during my years of counseling clients with infertility.
