Brian A. Kinnaird Ph.D.

Brian A. Kinnaird, Ph.D., is an interdisciplinary social scientist specializing in police social systems and organizational behavior. Since 2001, he has served on the criminal justice faculty at a number of public and private universities, including posts as director, department chair, and division dean. Dr. Kinnaird was a Policy Fellow with the Docking Institute of Public Affairs and is widely published in a variety of peer-reviewed and trade outlets focused on police organization and administration. His policy work is featured in the Police Chiefs Desk Reference for the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Dr. Kinnaird began his professional career as a commissioned law enforcement officer where he served for a decade in the patrol division for the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office in Hays, KS. During his tenure, he was assigned to posts as lead defensive tactics instructor, tactical team operator, and field training officer. After separating from police service, Dr. Kinnaird suffered a series of setbacks from maladjustment which inadvertently launched him into psychiatric treatment that was harmful.

Dr. Kinnaird is a peer and trauma support specialist, and author of the book Life After Law Enforcement. His lived experience forged his passion for transitional support where he currently conducts research, writes, and presents on the topic of police separation and civilian reintegration.
