Fausto-Sterling has achieved recognition for works that challenge entrenched scientific beliefs while engaging with the general public. Her past laboratory work has included studies of the genetics of development in fruit flies and the developmental ecology of flatworms. Her current work applies dynamic systems theory to the study of human development. Especially relevant for readers of Psychology Today is her experimental work on the emergence of sex differences in behavior in infants and her theoretical analyses of the emergence of human sexuality. This new work applies dynamic systems theory to the study of human development. A dynamic systems approach permits us to understand how cultural experience turns into bodily difference.
