You'd Be So Pretty If...

How to teach your daughter to love her body—even when you don't love your own.

A Mother's Day Gift For Your Daughter

It's not always easy to just "be."

I know, I know...it should be the other way around, right?

But this Mother's Day, one of the greatest gifts you can give to your daughter is also one that you can give to yourself: I'm talking about the gift of a healthy body image.

Yesterday was International "No Diet" Day, a day designed to encourage all women to abandon rigid attempts to control their weight and just...be.

But it's not always so easy to "be," is it?

The world is constantly telling us that we need to be leaner, smaller, skinnier and more fit -- that by becoming physically less, we'll be "more." Our daughters not only hear those messages, but watch us struggle with them, too. The value we place on weight and size sends a clear and long-lasting message about the value they should place on it, too.

Enough.

This Mother's Day, give your daughter -- and yourself -- the gift of self-acceptance. Try it for a day: No body bashing, no negative comments, no self-denial. Just a day when you speak positively about yourself and others, make healthy food choices and get a little exercise -- just for the way it makes you feel.

Then, the next day, try it again. And again.

Will things change overnight? Of course not.

Will you -- and she -- still face pressures from outside sources? Of course.

But a conscious decision to create a buffer zone, a place where you can both feel accepted and healthy, will go a long way toward helping both of you deal with those pressures.

Happy Mother's Day to all!
