Dara, I appreciated this and all of your blog entries. I know that your focus is on body image issues related to weight. I would like to add that girls and women can suffer from appearance-based judgements in other areas as well, and can limit their selves due to poor body image. As a young woman, my body was slender and conventionally attractive. But my facial features are masculine, my nose oversized and bumpy, and my skin always had numerous large pimples, hundreds of blackheads, and shiny oily skin. I believed that I was not pretty enough for all kinds of jobs, and I did choose to not put myself in situations where I would be the center of attention. I wouldn't have been hired at Hooters, either! Because realistically, many people do make appearance-based judgements, based on the prettiness of our face, in many situations.
