How to teach your daughter to love her body—even when you don't love your own.

Beyond The Comfort Zone

When's the last time you did something you've never done before -- something that made you feel a bit uncomfortable? This week, I had the experience of sitting on the other side of the desk when I was interviewed by The Washington Post for a story on mothers, daughters and body image. Read More

Excellence vs. Perfection

Great commentary!! Reminds me of something I saw somewhere and keep posted on my bulletin board:

Nine Ways Excellence Out Performs Perfection
Excellence is willing to be wrong.
Perfection is being right.

Excellence is risk.
Perfection is fear.

Excellence is powerful.
Perfection is anger and frustration.

Excellence is spontaneous.
Perfection is control.

Excellence is accepting.
Perfection is judgment.

Excellence is giving.
Perfection is taking.

Excellence is confidence.
Perfection is doubt

Excellence is flowing.
Perfection is pressure.

Excellence is journey.
Perfection is destination.

Pushing Past Your Comfort Zone

Dara, around the time I was turning 35, I decided it was time to kick things up a notch and start pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. I tried snowboarding, karate, coached an academic team and a sports team, and more. Just recently, after sitting on the sidelines of my daughters basketball games for the past 2 years, saying, "I could ref," I did it. I refed my first game last week. I haven't been that nervous since my first date with my husband. But I did it, and now I can tick that off of my life "to do" list. I think it's important to push past your comfort zone and get a different kind of adrenaline flowing because it reminds you how alive your are and how much fun just being alive can be. Thanks for a great post.

I agree

I agree, but I don't dance in public because I do look silly. Otherwise I'll do most anything else ;)

How true

How true

Dara,

Moving outside the comfort zone is important, especially because it confirms we're not settling for a life on the sidelines. Great column. I enjoyed reading it!
