Charlie Sheen, despite his denials to the contrary, is clearly unraveling.
And the whole world is watching.
We are continually transfixed by his every move, thought and action...we all know we are watching him go down in flames, yet no one is pulling the fire alarm.
He's certainly getting a lot of press, that's for sure. As usual, the 24-hour news cycle can't get enough of his antics. Sheen is a ratings bonanza, from TMZ to CBS. It's all very dramatic and over the top, what with the (two!) stolen Mercedes flying over cliffs, the wives, the children and their multiple domestic violence accusations, the substance abuse, the porn stars and the cancellation of Two and ½ Men.
People are glued to Twitter and the tube to see what kind of crazy pours out of his mouth next.
Like the rest of you, I have been watching Sheen's latest round of interviews...over and over and over. Obviously, human behavior and communication fascinate me; it's what I do for a living. I have spent decades studying what we do, why we do it and how to harness the power of communication. Sheen's outlandish behavior is so over the top, we have to wonder, is he a cunning PR genius (hell bent on creating buzz - ANY buzz - in the hopes of having the plum offers pour in) or are we watching a downward spiral into madness? I could literally spend weeks analyzing his every movement, searching for signs of depression, deception and denial...trying to determine which it is.
As I mentioned in my earlier post regarding David Arquette, science has recently determined that for humans, the process of thought and behavior goes a little something like this: Intent, Body Language, Thought, Words.
Which means, during conversation or confrontation, body language will belie deceit every time. If the conscious or subconscious intent is to deceive, guess what? Your body language will betray you, regardless of the words you choose to use. Body language is inherent, automatic, subconscious.
As I watch Sheen's clips, I am astounded by the amount of talking his body is doing (CS-Your body has a BIIIIIIG mouth - and you probably don't even know it). His flagrantly kooky ramblings aside ("I got tiger blood"...."My brain fires in such a way that it is not of this terrestrial plane." Say what!?)...it's his non-verbal signals that are sending shockwaves through me!
Certain flare ups in Sheen's body language (when he deviates from his "normal" pattern of behavior) indicate we have reached a Probing Point (PP) in our investigation...a time to look deeper, perhaps ask meaningful questions to determine what the underlying issues may be. Is it deception, dishonesty, or something else entirely?
Simple observation can help us understand Sheen's bizarre rants...allow me to share a few glimpses of what I found with you:
PP 1: Sheen's right hand is in a fist in between his legs. This could signal anger...anger at his interviewer? Anger at himself? Anger at the world watching him? Anger at those he feels are persecuting him unjustly? Whatever the underlying cause, its clear right off the bat that Sheen is tense, and likely harboring resentment and anger.
PP 2: Concerning the arrival of the authorities: "It was revealed that they were there to remove Bob and Max." As the corners of his mouth pull down in sadness, his forehead wrinkles and his tongue protrudes, a combination that likely indicates he is troubled by this turn of events, saddened by the loss of his children, distasteful of the way in which this family drama has played out in the public glare.
PP 3: On his reaction: "I didn't push it because I'm not into resisting the law." His eyebrows draw down, and his top lip pulls tight, which are signs of anger. Additionally, he emits a shoulder shrug, which is uncertainty. He may not "resist" the law...but he sure wants too!
PP 4: On challenges to his authority: "This is the now the challenge I claim to be looking for and I'm more then willing to take on this task." Here, Charlie shakes his head "NO" and juts his chin up. The "no" negates his claim that he is up to the challenge...though he is arrogantly insisting he will prevail against this imagined injustice, subconsciously he knows he is wrong.
PP 5: "If anyone thought my focus was directed in a (lips pulled in) radical capacity, umm, that's going to seem like child's play (lips pulled in again)." Charlie is clearly showing distain (think of how you make a face when eating something yucky - this situation is literally leaving a bad taste in his mouth!) for anyone and anything that dares to suggest that he is off his rocker.
PP 6: "They didn't have car seats, so I provided them (sigh). I said, "Don't say good bye, say see you later." This sigh, however brief, does indicate that Charlie feels discouraged. Either at the ineptitude of authorities, or the removal of his children, perhaps both.
PP 7: Regarding the question, "Sitting here right now, do you know where your children are?" Charlie responds, "I do not. That's a good question. (laughs and leaks contempt). That's a good point." Laughing is often a sign of nervousness during confrontation, so it is likely that Charlie does not find the removal of his children funny, but is in fact saddened by this turn of events. He alludes to this by saying "That's a good point." It is clearly just occurring to him that this fact might indicate his ineptitude as a parent; revealing his sons to be the collateral damage of his recklessness.
PP 8: A moment later, he catches himself; "At this moment, on live television, I do not know where my children are. And I'm not panicking." He licks his lips, shrugs his shoulders, and looks down and to the right. Though he claims to be unconcerned about where the boys are, his body language clearly says he is uncomfortable with this line of questioning.
PP 9: Regarding reports that estranged wife Brook said he threatened her to, "...cut [her] head off and put it in a box and send it to [her] mother." He nods yes (in agreement with her statement), then says, "That's colorful. (Commentator: "Did you say that?") No I did not, but that's a good one I guess." At which point he sneers (a clear sign of contempt) for Brook or for the truth? Here we see that Charlie does not immediately answer the question, instead, he deflects her accusation by noting how "colorful" it was. After buying a bit of time, he then denies her claims. A beat too late to be 100% truthful in my opinion.
PP 10: "Brook, I'm sorry that you felt things had to be done this way, but this does not involve any responsible parenting." Charlie says this with a shrug of the shoulder that hand clenched back into a fist between his legs. Again, we have extreme anger toward Brook, the mother of his youngest children. He is so angry, he has to repress his rage by clenching his fist (an attempt to hold back) and by calling her parenting skills into question.
PP 11: Moving on to the legal battle with CBS. "Oh that?" - Charlie relaxes, right hand no longer in a fist, taps his leg with his right hand now he pops his elbow back and takes up space, indicating he has an extremely high level of confidence when thinking about the situation with the network suits.
PP 13: Regarding why Charlie did drugs, he mentions that he did them "Because they work. they change the way you see things, they change the way you feel (smiles)." Smiling is the universal symbol of happiness, in this situation it is clear that drugs bring Sheen happiness. Either because it physically feels good, or it permits an escape from his life, whatever it is, it makes him happy.
PP 14: Regarding if he ever showed up drunk or on drugs: "Never, never, never loaded, never drunk." Here we see another shoulder shrug; perhaps indicative of trying to shrug off lie he is telling. Liars love the number three, especially when it comes to the word "never". In law enforcement, this was something we were always on the lookout during an interrogation - very highly indicative of deception. Liars also have a tendency to drop their pronouns, a subconscious way of removing the self from the lie they are telling. Here, Charlie does both.
Clearly, Charlie's body language had my BS Detector going bananas! They don't call me The Lyin' Tamer for nothing. It appears he was dishonest many, many times during his interviews - at the very least, he has severely repressed anger issues.
