Hot Coffee Mod: While violence is at the heart of many video games, not a lot of US senators get bent out of shape about it. But throw in a little sex, and Washington comes unglued, as they did in 2005 over the Hot Coffee Mod.
The Hot Coffee Mod was an interactive sex mini-game that allowed players of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (GTA:SA) to go inside with the main character CJ when a woman invited him to "have coffee." Without the mod, players could only hear love-making sound effects. With the mod, "going inside" took on a whole new meaning, as players could control aspects of the sex that followed. Mind you, genitals were never shown and most of us would be on shaky ground if we tried to argue that the content of the Hot Coffee Mod was more pornographic than the new vampire shows on TV.
The Hot Coffee mod created a huge scandal and moral outrage in 2005, which is somewhat amazing considering how technologically crude the portrayal of sex in the mod was, although the mod's "excitement meter" was interesting. To win, players had to manipulate the left analog stick to work an "excitement meter." If they could max out the excitement meter, the woman would tell CJ "You're the man." If players didn't do so well with the meter, they would be told "Failure to satisfy a woman is a CRIME!"
