What would Aristotle tell Internet users to do to stop giant Internet Service Providers from dismantling the free architecture of the Internet? These companies want to make people pay a la carte for downloads and time spent on the Internet. They want to make website operators pay for bandwidth so that only giant corporations will have an audible voice on the Internet. They want to be able to block, slow, or otherwise censor content. And they have already been given the legal green light to do these things.
Aristotle would tell us to make an effort to stop this from happening. Why? Because without a free Internet, we would lose access to valuable news and information; and, for Aristotle, rational decision-making, what he called practical wisdom, requires being informed.
So please join millions of Internet users throughout the world in going offline, today, New Year's Day, between the hours of 2 and 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, to express one unified voice against the creation of a pay-for-priority Internet system, the abolition of a flat fee for Internet access, and any attempt by Internet service providers to block, censor or otherwise interfere with legal Internet content.
