i'm not really sure i understand what you are saying--first you say that people don't want to play unless they are on varsity, then you say that all they want to do is play and they don't care enough about winning.
here's the thing--just because people don't care as much whether or not they win is not a really bad thing. i am on the track team at my high school, and i know that there is no way i will make varsity. however, as long as i am able to run in the open meets, i'm fine with that.
in addition, i do understand not wanting to do something unless you have a part in it. i quit the school play because i wasn't willing to put in 5 or more hours of practice a week for only 5 minutes onstage. there are plenty of things that i stop doing because it just isn't worth the time unless there are benefits for me, since i already have no free time due to school, homework, extracurricular activities, a job, taking care of my sibs, being actively involved in my church (including a class every morning at 6:00 am), and a social life.
ok wow, that kind of turned into a rant...
anyway, that's my take on this.
