An Occupy Theme Song: We Are the Many

Every protest movement needs a theme song.

Every protest movement needs a song. Songs mobilize and unify people. The lyrics of a song can describe social events, like Country Joe and the Fish singing " What are we fighting for? I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam."

They can list demands and solutions, like John Lennon's, Give Peace a Chance

Songs can even encourage self worth and belonging, like Woody Guthrie's lyrics, "this land is your land, this land is my land from California to the New York Island."

Other songs plead for fair treatment like Dylan's words "senators, congressmen please heed the call" in The Times They are a changin'

Still other songs are tributes as in Abraham, Martin, and John

When recently interviewed on Democracy Now, David Crosby and Graham Nash were asked what brought them to Occupy Wall St. and David Crosby responded, "It's part of our job...part of our job is to make people feel good and part of our job is to be the town crier...the troubadour carrying the message." Music is contagious and it moves people emotionally. People hum the tune and a contagion spreads ...the movement grows.

The Occupy Movement needs a theme song. Here is my suggestion: Makana's, We are the Many. It really moved me. Please let me know what you think.

What are your favorite protest songs? What song do you recommend for the Occupy Movements?
