The School Bus Is Making My Daughter Sick

What to do if your child is getting teased on the school bus Read More

Don't Tell The School

Talking to the school about this will just make it worse. It really will. The kids who are doing the teasing/bullying will be pulled into the principals office, and get a little lecture, and then they will leave and be very ticked off at the girl who ratted on them. They will tease her more and it will be much, much worse. There is even an article all about this phenomenon by another Psychology Today writer. Any adult involvement, any intervention, only makes the problem worse for the victim. If she rats on these boys, THEIR friends will start to tease her, too. And if will only get worse.

The best thing to do is for the mother to teach her daughter to grow a backbone. The girl needs to shrug it off, smile, laugh, act like she's not even remotely bothered. She could even walk onto the bus, and before the boys call her a "hippo" and sing a hippo song, she could make a comment like "where's my chorus? You guys are slacking today!". That will shut them up. If she acts unaffected, even entertained, the enjoyment is sucked out of the teasing. I am certain that after a week or two of this, the bullying will stop.

I was teased in high school, and it worked then.

Don't Get The School Involved...Whatever You Do.

Great advice - you better

Great advice - you better believe that if the kids who are doing the bullying are called on the carpet and punished by losing bus privileges, the bullying will stop - because the parents of these kids cannot drive them to school. Bullies must not be ignored - they need to be confronted by school administration and dealt wit - before it gets worse.

If anything the girl's

If anything the girl's parents need to take her to school themselves & keep her off the bus. Much worse may be going on than what the girl is telling. I developed at a very young age and had older boys grabbing my breasts when I was 7 years old. I was terrified. I know of kids that were stripped naked on the school bus & some that even had sex in the back. There is much goes on and it is a terrible thing to force kids to ride the bus and be subjected to abuse from much older children.

Nothing can be done without

Nothing can be done without proof. Right now it's her word against the boys that they are bullying her. There should be a camera installed on that school bus. If there is proof that the boys are basically sexually harassing her, revoke their bus privileges immediately. If their parents complain, show them the proof.
