How do you know that a recession is not the force that separates the wheat from the chaff? In other words, a recession is where the good companies shine. In the analogy, yes, given you have Armstrong's athletic ability, you should break away on a hill. If your athletic ability is weaker, however, trying to do so will probably be worse for you in the end. The hill is where the awesome athletes are able to get farther ahead. Trying to get farther ahead on a hill does not make you awesome. This advice seems to be backward attribution.
