This was the year of Emotional First Aid, as while not all my articles were on the topic of the common emotional injuries we sustain in daily life, those that resonated with readers most were.
Here are the top 10 most read posts starting with the most read (I’m not a fan of countdowns that force you to read all the way to the bottom to get to # 1). Do note: I end with an article that didn’t quite make the top 10 but did land me on TV doing a short but hilarious interview. You will find a link to that interview below. 1. Ten Surprising Facts about Rejection: This article was the #1 most read on Psychology Today.com for over two days in July, amassing well over 100,000 reads. The combination of a universal theme (rejection) and some truly surprising facts made it an article people wanted to share with their friends.
2. Seven Habits of Highly Emotionally Healthy People: This article was also the #1 most read on Psychology Today.com for a couple of days, and was even featured in the Nov/Dec issue of the Magazine. Emotional Health is something we all covet, and the practical suggestions I offer struck a chord with readers. In fact, of over 1,000 articles posted on Psychology Today.com each month, these two were the #1 and #2 most read in July 2013.
3. What to Do When You’re Married but Lonely: How can you be married and lonely, some people asked when I told them about this article. And yet millions of people feel profound loneliness and emotional disconnection despite living with a spouse. This article spoke to the emotional pain and desperation they feel and offered suggestions for change.
4. The Five Ingredients of an Effective Apology: The success of this article is an indication of how bad our apologies usually are and why they rarely resolve interpersonal tensions and elicit authentic forgiveness. It was picked up by Lifehacker.com and featured in an article on their site.
5. Why Loneliness is a Trap and How to Break Free: It is both fascinating and tragic, but lonely people usually feel so emotionally raw, and consequently, so protective and defensive, they tend to (unconsciously) push away the very people who could alleviate their loneliness. Hopefully this article helped people recognize these self-defeating patterns and change them.
6. Why Some People Hate Receiving Compliments: A similar fascinating but unfortunate psychological dynamic occurs with people who have low self-esteem. Their poor self-image often makes people with low self-esteem resistant to the very positive feedback that could make them feel better about themselves.
7. Ten Signs You Have Fear of Failure: Most people with a fear of failure are unaware they have it. Hopefully, reading this article helped people overcome this fear and rid themselves of the self-defeating behaviors associated with it.
8. How to Immunize Yourself from Rejection before a Date: Dating involves treading through a minefield of potential rejection in order to find a potential mate. This article was also the #1 most read article on Psychology Today.com when I posted it, primarily because it offers a simple technique that can help make you feel more confident and be more resilient to rejection when you go on a date.
9. The Seven Hidden Dangers of Brooding and Ruminating: Worrying, brooding, ruminating, and dwelling—whatever you call it, we all do it, right? Only we shouldn’t because it turns out this common practice has a wicked downside. In fact it has seven wicked downsides, and we’re not aware of any of them. This article is one everyone should read.
10. Rejection on Facebook Hurts as Much as in Real Life: This article shot to the #1 most read on Psychology Today.com as soon as I posted it. So many people tell me about how social media makes them feel rejected, I felt it was important to offer people a way to think about such experiences that could ease some of their emotional pain. Hopefully this article did just that.
How to Survive 50 Common Marital Pet Peeves: This article almost made the top 10 and perhaps should have. I list 50 marital pet peeves in two versions each: regular and extra-annoying. A Chicago Morning News Show had me on as a guest to discuss the list and shocked me even before I could open my mouth… Click here for the 5 minute segment with their hilarious anchors.
