The Power of Slow

Embracing time so you have more of it

How Friends Help with Slow

The power of slow shared is the best kind!

If you're like me, you spend a lot of your weekends catching up on all the things that you didn't get to during the week. Living in Germany, we aren't allowed to use powertools on Sundays, so it limits the amount of actual renovation work or house maintenance we can do. But we still manage to find a ton of things to fill our hours, most of which seem less than leisurely.

So this weekend we decided to do things a little differently. After all, the power of slow says leisure is an integral part of productivity. No down time? No way!

We invited a bunch of friends to frolic for the weekend. They are the boardgame-playing kind of people who would prefer to play than discuss politics. So we pulled out one of our all time favorites, The Settlers, along with the extended Seafarer version and played a total of five hours.

Saturday was one of those perfect days you cannot plan. The morning was overcast so we had a nice breakfast, then ventured outside for a brisk hour walk while the kids played with the new neighbors. My husband never once grabbed a power tool, but prefered a spatula to whip up an impromptu cake, which we promptly gobbled up. In between bites, we continued our marathon board game, only to interrupt for another walk to the country store and a two-hour trip to a beer garden for dinner.

By ten p.m. we were bushed (and I finally secured the winning point!).

When our friends asked us what we typically do on weekends, we gave them a puzzled look as if we didn't really know. But then it occured to us that our favorite thing is to do what we had just done: played non-stop with food, beverage and really good friends.

Leisure is the key to happiness. Friends are the best antidote to a fast-paced life without pause. The next time you need a moment of slow, invite some friends for some silly frolic time. The power of slow shared is the best kind!
