PLAY YOUR POSITION

As you run life's race stay in your lane

For the sports enthusiast, the athlete or the coach this phrase is key for the over all benefit of the team. If the consistency and accountability of maintaining your planned objective is not met then chaos will quickly ensue as each player seeks the glory of another. In the corporate world, playing your position can be applied to many circumstances. In the corporate world playing your position may entail adhering to the letter of your job description or giving account to strict compliance guidelines.

In regard to life in general, playing your position takes on a whole different connotation. Playing your position can mean waiting your turn as everyone around you seemingly gets their blessing and their time in the glory light of opportunity and eventual success. Playing your position may mean not paying attention to what is being said about you or who is taking advantage of you.

Deep in the marrow of your existence you know that fate has allowed circumstances to occur in your life to get the product from you that is key to redeeming your value. When gold is initially mined from the ground it does not nearly look as attractive and desirable to wear around your neck or on you body. After a process of filtration and refinement of pre-planned and specific criteria the impurities are discarded and the true essence of the element can be redeemed. If something occurs during the refining process such as the introduction of another alloy or a prolonged change in the process then the redeeming qualities of the gold have been compromised.

Imagine if all the great U.S. Generals such as Patton, Eisenhower and Grant decided to let impatience and the inability to follow leadership dominate their climb through the ranks. What if Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and spiritual icons such as Gandhi and Mother Theresa chose to compromise their position for more material rewards? The history of Christian faith would change demonstrably if John the Baptist suddenly got the urge to move out of position due to jealousy of Christ’s impending ministry and tried to sabotage him before he got started? Where would modern U.S. social consciousness be if the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. cowered instead of answering the call to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955?

All these noted history makers played their position because they knew their value to the overall game plan according to their purpose in life. By determining your value as a piece rather than the sum total of the whole, then you will soon realize the redemptive nature of knowing your place. Simply put, when you search deep within you will be comforted by the peace that lies in not being concerned by the distracting alloys that are placed in your refining process. The words and feeble attempt of others cannot undermine what you know as your definition. When you look up the meaning of a word it may have a few different applications but only those apply.

The meaning of water is true and definitive and no one can change it. The application of the word fast may be relative but its meaning is still definitive. Once you know who you are and from whom you come and then to where you are sent, then your value cannot be undermined or redefined. Seek the rewards that lie in the impervious and unparalled determination of knowing your value. Your life is not an accident nor are the thoughts that take you from day to day.  There is substance and purpose in all you have experienced. Take courage in knowing that you don’t have to compete with anyone for what life has promised you.  Play your position, the quarterback is looking for uplifted hands and a consistent heart that is reliable when needed.
