While I promised to talk about the neurochemistry of SSRIs in this post (and how they often work as performance-enhancing drugs), I’ve decided to save that for the moment and instead revisit another of the main arguments in the war against steroids: the question of cheating. Read More

Drugs and Sport

Another good piece to make us think!

And to those who'll claim you're overstating the case: Let's remember Tom Simpson who died on Mount Ventoux in the 13th stage of the TDF--1967. He was on the Strychnine/Brandy cocktail. And then, of course, we should keep the whole ephedrine phase in our consciousness.

One also wonders what we'll be saying about the current "energy drink" crazein 10 years. As an amateur athlete competing in marathon, triathlon, cycling events etc., I can tell you that the "course" is littered with crumpled cans of Red Bull. And the pros know the benefit of jacking up on caffeine, taurine, ginseng, etc. too.

Doubt this? Try it yourself (if you're moderately fit and healthy): Run a mile. Stop. Now slam down a triple shot of espresso (or an Amp, if you prefer). Wait 3-5 minutes. Now run the mile again. Screw the watch, the chip in your shoe, or your wrist mounted GPS. You won't need them. You'll know you've been enhanced. Stimulants, from a cup of tea to a greenie, "enhance" performance, whether banned or not.
