Judging Michael Phelps' Personality

When people judge someone who they admire as much as Michael Phelps, the judgment affects the person doing the judging as well as the person who is judged.  Judgments of this young man affect our view of ourselves and our view of how good it is possible to be. Read More

Michael Phelps, A-Rod, etc.

This is interesting food for thought. I, too, have a tough time sorting out how I feel about Michael Phelps choice and the accompanying consequences. Stories like his remind me so much of some of the heroes from Greek Mythology who possess god-like powers, yet are hopelessly vulnerable to a certain tragic flaw.

Let's take this story even further -- how will A-Rod (and the other players, nameless thus far) be judged for making certain choices? Are they both equally culpable on some level? Will A-Rod meet the same judgment as Michael Phelps? Should he?

judgements

I remember when Tara Reid was getting all kinds of negative press for partying a bit too hard as was Linsey Lohan and countless others. My first inclination was to give them a break. Stardom is probably difficult and what teenager is going to turn down a party life when they are literally escorted into clubs and have free drinks thrown at them ( even if they are underage!). I thought, "wow if I were a celebrity and college photos emerged of my behaviors I'd be crucified by the media." On the other hand, with money and power comes responsibility. If you want millions in appearences you must accept that you are required to uphold a certain image. Everyone is going to mess up at some point and the public should forgive. Michael Phelps is hopefully learning about his new reality and has the choice to either accept it or reject it. I don't question a young man like Phelps for smoking pot ( big f..ing deal), but I do question a young man like Phelps who is showed all that he has to lose and continues to party in the spotlight. Live and learn and decide whats worth it to your reputation and financial goals. Fair or unfair I'd be worried about anyone who puts recreational drug use above millions of dollars of endorsements. I suspect Phelps will be putting the bong down for good.

Hero

Michael Phelps is an American Hero. He stood tall and made America proud at the Beijing Olympics. This is how America treats its heroes, we forget all of the hard work Michael Phelps did to achieve his task, we forget the pride we felt with the each gold medal, we forget how Phelps helped America to be competitive against a Chinese when they planned on winning all of the gold’s, we forget all of those things and hang a man for smoking a glass pipe at a college party. It is time that we as a country stand up for the rights of the individual, it’s time we stand together with our neighbors and take collective control of our destinies. Write a congressman or a senator any of them; imagine the weight of millions of emails calling for a change in policy. In this moment in America anything is possible just Google the email address of you’re representative and send him or her short email. It will take 10 minutes but then you have taken responsibility for change. A senator considers each email as representative of 2 thousand voters.
