The Mystery of Happiness

How to live a soulful and spiritual life.

Recover Your Love of Innocence

If you have love, you have everything

Imagine being born. You leave the safety of your mother and enter a world that, until the moment of your birth, didn't exist for you. Suddenly you open your eyes to brightness and the loving smiles of your parents; a generous supply of milk is delivered to your mouth, and your mind is exposed to a bewildering array of things, sights, and sounds. You grow up and experience new challenges--education, friendships, marriage, parenthood. At each stage of your life you'll be offered joy, pain, anxiety, despair, and excitement. Welcome it all. Life is a total package; you cannot pick and choose what you want. Live life as it is; experience its sorrows and exultations. Dip deeply into and drink from the well of life. There, in the depth of your emotions, you will witness the mysteries of life.

There is a parable of a man who willed his treasure to his only son, provided the son became a fool. When the man died, his will was brought to the town judge. But the judge couldn't execute the will because he didn't understand what the stipulation meant. The judge called the best lawyers in the town for a consultation, but then he gave up trying to make a decision after listening to the lawyers' contradictory explanations of what a "fool" meant. Finally, the judge decided to consult the village wise man. When the judge arrived at the wise man's house, he found the man crawling on his hands and knees, giving a "horsey ride" to his two-year-old son. The judge reluctantly asked the wise man what becoming a fool meant. The exhausted, breathless man managed to answer: "This, what you see."

The deceased man in the story wanted to ensure that his son would recover his innocence and cultivate a childlike sense of delight and spontaneity. So must you, if you want to inherit the treasures of life and restore your sense of wonder, puzzlement, and amazement about the world and about your being in it.
