You must actively help your tribe flourish. Your community is your ground and you begin when you are planted on it. After you grow deep roots, you can find water, grow tall, catch sun, mature, and bear fruit. But you must fertilize your ground; this means taking care of the parks and water system of your community; becoming active in the campaign against air pollution; volunteering at schools, hospitals and newspapers in your town; and strengthening your house of worship. It means giving. Such devotional giving will not deplete you, but will replenish you. The Bible says: Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. (Luke 6:38)
Devotional giving isn't an act of charity but a responsibility, the fulfillment of communal duty. Fertilizing your ground means serving the needs of the community and fully adopting its values and ethics. It means being concerned for the community's safety, integrity, and well-being.
