The Mystery of Happiness

How to live a soulful and spiritual life.

The Ground Is Best Fertilized By Those Who Dwell On It

Give and it'll be given to you

You must actively help your tribe flourish. Your community is your ground and you begin when you are planted on it. After you grow deep roots, you can find water, grow tall, catch sun, mature, and bear fruit. But you must fertilize your ground; this means taking care of the parks and water system of your community; becoming active in the campaign against air pollution; volunteering at schools, hospitals and newspapers in your town; and strengthening your house of worship. It means giving. Such devotional giving will not deplete you, but will replenish you. The Bible says: Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. (Luke 6:38)

Devotional giving isn't an act of charity but a responsibility, the fulfillment of communal duty. Fertilizing your ground means serving the needs of the community and fully adopting its values and ethics. It means being concerned for the community's safety, integrity, and well-being.

In belonging to a community you immediately inherit the benefits of the work of previous generations. You walk on the streets they paved, cross the bridges they built, work in factories they constructed, read in the libraries they founded, sleep safely because of the police and fire departments they established, get medical care in the hospitals they opened, and send your children to schools they created. Reap with gratitude the crop that others have sown. There is absolutely no sin in doing so, provided that you also joyfully sow a new harvest for others to reap. Only then will you have established and secured your spiritual continuity.
