The Mystery of Happiness

How to live a soulful and spiritual life.

Confusion Precedes Enlightenment

I don't know what to do with my life.

If you do not have faith, your moments of clarity are false, reflecting on self-satisfaction. Your conclusions will be no more than the clarity of self-congratulation. The confusion inherent in statements such as, "I don't know what to do with my life," or "I am not sure what life is all about," is much more valuable than the false certainty associated with the declaration of the sundry philosophies of self. Such certainties are false, though if repeated frequently enough they start sounding right and convincing. These mind-made pseudo-truths clutter the soul and leave no room for enlightenment. Unless you empty your mind of such false truths, light cannot penetrate.

While on the path to spiritual enlightenment you have to tolerate some confusion. This feels like being in a fog so heavy that you cannot see even a few feet in front of you. Forging ahead as if you could see far into the distance is the wrong thing to do. Those who deny they can't see and still move ahead miss the opportunity for spiritual gestation. Wherever they go, the fog moves with them. They may stumble onto gold and power or fall and destroy things (such as jobs, health, marriages, and other relationships). Worst of all, these people remain in a permanent fog bank, which they come to consider a natural state of existence. They get quite comfortable in the fog and the accidental introduction of light confuses them.

Real strength comes when you admit that only God knows. If you maintain your faith, you will be rewarded by the gradual lifting of the fog and will be bathed in light. Now, you can safely go in any direction; the light will follow.
