The Mystery of Happiness

How to live a soulful and spiritual life.

Be Joyful! Phil. 4:4

A smile is a sign of gratitude

Look around you. Everything in your sight has been built, planted, and organized for your use and benefit. And I don't mean the indispensables of living, such as air and water, which God offers for free. I mean the buildings in which you live or work; the roads on which you travel; the trees whose fruit you eat; the schools, libraries, museums, universities, and theaters you enjoy. People who lie mostly forgotten in unvisited tombs made these wonderful things. You benefit from their hard work. In their anonymity, they were the hands and feet of God. You may be part of this sacred history by doing God's work for future generations. Be grateful for the opportunity to be useful as an instrument of His deeds.

Being useful is the cornerstone of the meaning of life, and work is the concrete manifestation of such usefulness. However, to extract meaning from work you must be grateful for having work, for being able to work, for having loving coworkers and knowing that you are contributing something to the world. This recognition, if you allow it, will bring a smile to your face. Keep your energy system high by thinking beautiful thoughts; they'll also make you beautiful. Gratefulness is the ultimate prosperity. With your positive attitude you'll make others feel joyful and you'll deserve one of the greatest blessings of God: His smile. There is a prayer in the Bible, The Lord will smile on you and be kind to you. (Num. 6:25)

Those who wear an angry, irritable, and depressed face at work, whatever the justification, are suffering from a lack of gratitude. They can find meaning neither in their work nor elsewhere in their lives. Their mood at work carries to their home life and everywhere else, including their sleep. Nothing makes any difference to these negative people-no increase in salary, no promotion, no change of job-though they claim it might. After a short respite following such an external gratification, they'll return to their ungrateful mode. Don't allow their negative emotions-irritation, weariness, boredom, feelings of worthlessness-to get a foothold in your psyche. The Bible says, Every day is a terrible day for a miserable person, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast. (Prov. 15:15) Emotions are contagious, not only from one person to another but also from within. A smile on your face for having contributed to your world (in however minor a way) will reverberate in your body and in the body of the world.
