Man vs. Wild, Bear Grylls, and the Violent Nature Myth

A few months ago, surfing the television, I happened upon a scene... Read More

I completely agree with

I completely agree with everything you say here. Some people are willing to do anything to make an easy buck. Man Vs. Wild is extremely fake and set up. The "survival techniques" shown on his show are dangerous and nonsensical!

Survivorman is a more realistic show in that realm. He shows basic survival techniques and doesn't have a camera crew trap animals or bite the heads off of them while they are still alive for shock value.

I came across this article as

I came across this article as I worked on this show in post production. Some of it was set up according to the crew and a lot of the animals were bought in from farms. Bear and his guys are all deeply religious, they didn't want to cause any suffering. That said, he maintains the techniques work, the crew were all laughing about it, doubting him etc. and apparently he stuck to his guns to the end.

Looking past that, for a Psychology publication, I am surprised you missed the highly psychological survival advice Bear dishes out throughout the series. All the advisors that I was in edit meetings with, and Bear himself, say that this is the most important survival skill of all and we were told to put lots of that in. Y'know, take heart in the little victories, think about your family, don't despair and so on.

I completley disagree

Although i am certain the some events in the show were fabricated or approached to on purpose even though a simpler more mundane route was available, i do like watching the show.

Young men in need of a few ethics lessons? Considering Bear is in the wild in rough conditions the whole day, i am quite okay with him smashing a snakes head on a rock. It's not as if he chops down whole forests and eradicates new species. He places an almost none existant strain on the food chain. How is his behavior any different from the behavior of hunter-gatherer individual?

i am not even mentioning the mental toughness he projects and his psychological survival skills(staying positive etc...)

to be completly honest, i think you are a little soft, if this show produced this kind of response from you. killing an animal here and there for the sake of food is probably one of the least cruel things taking place on TV.

i completly agree with you.

i completly agree with you. he is very soft the mental aspect of the show is in my oppinon very important. americans are slowly lossing this aspect of servival. i have talked to many people in the army ranking high and this new generation of kids are faling well below, because of ideals like soft touch and bad politics and vido games. in my oppinon 99% of people when staring death in the eye would do anything to live. in the coming generations i fear for us becaue of this soft touch.
