The Restoring Power of Imagination

Barry, You're Helping Us Feel Better

Whether times are good or bad, happy or sad, Obama has soul

I'm stepping little outside of my usual focus in this blog, but maybe not. If you didn't catch this one on the morning news, you missed this-- President Barrack Obama has a singing voice. He broke into a verse of "Let's Stay Together," Al Green's classic soulful love anthem, during a speech at the Apollo Theater in Harlem:

My only disappointment was to be left waiting for "loving you whether times are good or bad, happy or sad... ooh yeah." Okay, a good love song gets me going, but this mini-healing arts moment came just in time. I don't know about you, but I cannot watch one more minute of the Republican presidential candidates primary debates. Maybe it's just me, but the four remaining candidates are so lifeless that their own party can hardly pay attention, nevermind work up a decent show of passion.

But President Obama, in less than a minute your smooth vocal riff gave me just a little more hope and certainly put a little soul in my step today (and possibly an earworm that is going to make me hear this song when I want to fall asleep tonight). A leader who can sing is not going to reverse climate change or a sluggish economy in a single bound. But one that can use song to share a bit of his own humanity has what it takes to bring back some feeling to a country numbed by job loss, financial woes and war. And there is going to be more than one couple singing Al Green's tune tonight, too.

So grace us with that voice from time to time, Mr. President. The Republicans are nowhere near this much fun, soulful or human.

Be well,
