The Gift of ADHD

How to Transform Problems into Strengths

Are You Too Hyper?

Channel Hyperactivity Toward Targeted Goals to Achieve Your Dreams

Hyperactivity may take you down pathways others would never find, may lead you on adventures or wild goose chases. You may talk at a 100 miles a minute or even faster. You may see those without ADD as "slow boring talkers" as one adult with ADD called almost everyone else in the world. Your zest may make others' conversations seem to drone on endlessly. Your tendency to fidget constantly, wishing you could be set free from the constraints to sit still, may be an exuberance to express your energy and high spirits. You may prefer extreme sports, extreme vacations, extreme almost anything to structured activities. You may wish people would stop telling you to slow down and yearn for someone to instead match your speed.

To find the gift in your hyperactivity, you must first accept your desire for physical movement and stimulation as a need rather than a symptom. When you take this need seriously, your hyperactivity can fuel productivity and creativity. Having a high level of energy can be one of the greatest gifts anyone can have; the older we get, the more obvious this becomes. When you give yourself permission to translate your hyperactivity into enthusiasm, you unleash the power to get your life on track and make dreams come true. It's time to get in touch with your wild child and figure out how to channel the energy toward targeted goals.

The ADD adult's recklessness is often driven by the need to be doing, rather than planning or figuring something out. It's "Fire, ready, aim!" instead of "Ready, aim, fire!" This reversal of the normal order, this acting before planning, can be a highly effective way to gather information others will never have. If a course of action bears visible risks that others will not take but you will, you will learn things those others won't. You may fail more often, but in doing so gain valuable skills, contacts, and experiences.
