Chaos Theory and Batman: The Dark Knight Part I

Anyone who knows the comic will know about the characters and what they represent: 1) The Joker = chaos, 2) The Batman = order; 3) Two Face = pure chance. There are many lines in the film which "spank your face" with these metaphors, and if the acting was not so good, the joker's lines could have easily been over the top in making the deeper, existential questions within the film too obvious and contrived for most moviegoers. Comment on your analysis

I find your analysis to be very good. I agree on that whole chaos-Joker thing. I also find the Two-Face - chance analogy to be a very clever one. If you want check out my analysis at http://www.encefalus.com (my homepage). I made a few comments concerning that first part of yours, too. I'll be waiting the other parts to comment further, since I am very happy that fellow psychologists have started to take the whole superhero thing seriously :)

Thanks "Encefulus"

Encefalus - your web-site is amazing. I can't figure out how on earth you have time to do all of that while being a grad student at the same time. It took me over 2 hours just to post the batman blogs 2 & 3 this AM, and they were already written last week. One of my favorite profs used to joke that opening the mail was his only free time each day. I had a similar experience. I'm guessing that you are in social psyc, but maybe cognitive. Loved the info on Kahneman and existentialism. Speaking of which, there will be some existential themes in Batman parts 2 & 3 today that you may enjoy. Thanks again for joining in here - and anyone intersted in a very cool web site - please follow "Encefalus's" link above. -Dave

Thank you Dr David

Thank you for your reply Dr David! I'm sorry that I am replying to you a month later, but I had too many things on my mind and I had forgotten about this article :). I found it again now, that I thought to check Psychology Today for any interesting articles of the last month I might have missed.

You are right about your guesses. I am actually and undergraduate student of cognitive psychology, but I am interested in social psychology a great deal, although I have my disagreements over the course that research and analysis has taken in the last decades. That's why you'll find lots of articles concerning both matters, but try to be a little original (like neuropolitics for example).

Thnx again, since you cheered me up a great deal! :)

Dark Knight

Hi David

I have read your batman chaos theory and you have made me see the film in a whole new perspective.

Wow!

After seeing your name in Empire Magazine, I was desperate to see your blog. I am deeply amazed at your theories on Chaos! I agree on how Joker = Chaos, Batman is Order and Two Face is chance (I mean, his story is all about the chance of a coin). I mean chaos is the Joker's entity in my opinion - he does one thing that sets off a whole destructive group of other events!
I found your detail analisis deeply engaging, and I most certainly agree with your theories.
As regards to your comment toward the end, on whether Heath Ledger, if he wins an award, was heightened by his death - Ledger was an fantastic actor and his films for the most part were successful, but yes I do believe that if Heath did not pass away, then he would not of won or will win an Oscar.

Again, amazing analysis.

Re: wow

Thanks very much Emma. BTW - Empire magazine? If you happen to see my reply here, I'd love to know which issue. I'm working on tenure at my university this year, and sometimes mentions like this in popular magazines count for something in that process. And again, thank you very much for your feedback - it is meaningful.

Warmly,

Dr. Dave
