Mark, a 43 year-old executive, saw his doctor for his annual physical. Reviewing his laboratory tests, the doctor noted that Mark's total cholesterol level was for the first time over 200mg/dL. Read More

Race
White people probably have lower cholesterol than black peole. White people are genetically more prone to depression than black people (not because of cholesterol). The same is true for Asians. Things like that may be skewing results.
Low Cholesterol
It has come to my attenbtion that people will slant studies to fit their agenda, This so called researcher is now trying to tell an audience that now low cholesterol is bad, what guff! I was a Nurse for 20 years working in medical and psychiatric settings and looked at many lab reports and his findings on cholesterol I totally disagree with for I have seen many pts normal and elevated cholesterol exhibit the same behavior as his findings dispute. I and many members of my family, freinds have low cholesterol readings, my father who is 95 years old has low cholesterol and his mental acquity is enviois and has never exhibited any S/S suicidal /homicidal behavior in fact he constantly exhibits a positive attitude. Finally those of you in the population with low cholesterol look at this article and realize it is just his opinion and bot fact.
Yes, low cholesterol has been
Yes, low cholesterol has been the Holy Grail of medical practice for several decades now. This researcher is not advocating for HIGH cholesterol, he is merely warning that there are effects if cholesterol is driven low. The evidence you present is anecdotal--based on a single case, which is less scientifically valid that the peer reviewed studies which he quotes. Cholesterol, like sodium, potassium, calcium, and many other blood chemicals, has an optimal range, that's all. It is his EDUCATED opinion, based on research, not subjective experience, and one that has validity in medical practice.
Low cholesterrol
Have you heard of any cases where extremely low cholestrol caused Parkinsons or Pd like symptoms?
This appears to have happened to my husband.

Cholesterol and the cell
Animal cells do not have cell walls. Plants, fungi and bacteria have cell walls. All cells have a plasma membrane or cell membrane. Cholesterol plays a role in the stabilization of the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane in animals.
Low cholesterol and abstract thinking
At last someone is talking about this! When I was the medical consultant for the Renfrew Center of South Florida, treating anorexics, who often had very low cholesterols, I noted that before they could participate in the treatment, their cholesterol levels had to get up to at least 120. As a family physician trained in genetics, I am also aware that one of the major developmental genes of the forebrain, sonic hedgehog, requires cholesterol in order to function. Psychotherapy requires the making of new interneuron connections, specifically in the realm of emotional control. I wonder what role cholesterol may have in postnatal brain development as well as prenatal.
I am 23 years old. I've been
I am 23 years old. I've been depressed/borderline suicidal for as long as I can remember. I got my blood work done as part of a check up and HDL and LDL total 149. My ratio is awesome, but I don't feel healthy at all. I've become lethargic and gained quite a bit of weight. What's weird is I've been eating fast food for a long time now because of school, and my cholesterol is still below 150. When I don't eat fast food I'm pretty healthy and try to eat "clean" foods. I feel kinda trapped. Even when I was healthy (biking, hiking, climbing, ect.) I still had horrible mood swings. I feel like this cholesterol bit could be the culprit. Where can I find out more, and maybe raise it a tad in a healthy way?
