When Children with Autism Grow up.

What happens to the children with autism when they grow up? I have worked with many children with autism whose parents spend many a sleepless night worrying about this. Will I be able to care for them? Will they have to go to an institution? What services are out there when my child with autism becomes an adult with autism? Read More

Help for people with autism

Your blog is interesting to read. I have a close nephew with autism and is nice to now there is more help for him in the future. It is because of him I have started a site at yourautismfacts.com to help people understand more about autism. Please visit and tell me what you think.

There is more much more we need Join us on Dec 23

I wish it were that simple and we could go off into the sunset with a smile. There are very alarming statistics that we need to be prepared for. Sure there are places and warehouses for some levels but the services and placements that our children need are not out there. My son is 15,001 on a wait list in Illinois. We need to make the Obama Transition Team aware of needs and concerns. Please join me on Dec 23rd for the Autism Health Care twitter day...

I have volunteered to be moderator and host for the Obama-Biden Transition Project Autism Health Care Community Discussion. There is a very limited time to make and impact on this discussion. I came up with hosting a Autism Health Twitter day to have a discussion with all stakeholders. We will have a great day because the word is out. You could help us make it a impactful day to parents by helping us get the word out. Please if you could post anything about Autism and Healthcare then mention Autism Health Care twitter day on Dec 23 all day. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Tim

Funds for Autism Research

Dear Mr. Welsh,

Thank you for your comment, and I apologize for my delayed response. I am thrilled to report that as a result of the Recovery Package, there has been several calls for proposals for research in the area of Autism. I cannot speak for more funding for adult services in the community, but clearly more are needed, but from the perspective of research, Obama has followed up on his promises. We are moving in the right direction.

I echo Tim's thoughts. To

I echo Tim's thoughts. To know that there are options for an adult with ASD (which itself is debatable, especially as we move down in direction away from "high" functioning) and to have access to those options is another thing. Awareness of ASD is rising, but most media coverage is on children with ASD and research for children on ASD. The mystery of how to cope with a family member with ASD, especially after age 18, can be hugely overwhelming. What is you can't pay for your son or daughter to be in an institution?

I agree and understand your difficulty

I do not want to suggest that things are perfect. Clearly, there is much more we can do to provide support and services for people at all levels of the spectrum, but I do feel that with increased awareness and advocacy that things are getting better. With hopefully more funds available for social services under this government hopefully more resources will become available in the future.

Support Services

Hi Lindsay,

I'm a therapist in the San Francisco Bay area, and I focus on clients of all ages with Asperger's and ASDs.

It's really tough out here to find support for adults because the needs are so varied. So many people on the autism spectrum are isolated or underemployed, so there is certainly a need for support groups, professional and career coaching and opportunities for socializing.. Many support groups and services focus on children or individuals with lower IQs. And of course with our budget issues, many programs are underfunded.

Support Services

Dear Patricia,

Thank you for your comment. Here in the Boston area we have the Asperger's Association of New England that hosts support groups, activities, even life coaching! I realize that these types of organizations are not everywhere. If you contact the AANE though, perhaps they might know of other organizations in your neck of the woods.
