What should parents do if they suspect their child has an autism spectrum disorder? Read More

Autism
I stumbled upon this blog and found some of the sited resources helpful. http://itriagehealth.com/health-blog/act-on-autism
Adults who did not get diagnosed with ASD as children
I have auditory hypersensitivity and some other issues. What resources are available for adults who may have been labelled/mislabelled as "depressive," etc who would like to be re-evaluated for ASD? What treatments might help? What should such individuals look for in a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist? What questions should they be asking to do more for their health when previous doctors, teachers, et al have not seen the big picture, or connected the dots?

Great questions. In the past many adults were misdiagnosed. I have written a short chapter in my new book coming out, 42 Things to Know About Autism, and will write the next post here on this topic so it will help you. You do need to take care in finding the right person to diagnose you (if it is Asperger's you have). Check back in a few days and I will have something posted to help you. Thanks for your patience.
Thank you Chantal
Congratulations Chantal! on forging a new means of sharing with all people the wealth of your experience and knowledge, especially for all of those people in need of a resource like you. Awareness and action will come from this. I also send you my congratulations and kudos for your article in the Huffington Post about the HBO movie and your interview with Temple Grandin. The movie is not only very moving and extremely well done, it evidences the importance of being mindful of the challenges and long lasting positive impact people impacted and affected by autism, auspergers and the array of spectrum disorders can have on ALL of us. Temple is an inspiration for all people, and one of the best that has recently been portrayed on the silver screen IMO. Much good can came from this movie. Thank you for sharing your views and insights about it. (For those of you who have not read Chantal's review of the HBO movie here is the link to the Huffington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/chantal-sicile-kira/temple-grandin-the-hbo... )

Dear Anonymous,
I feel for you - I understand how tired you must be especially with twins.
Can you visit another professional who is more knowledgeable about autism who can help you get the right diagnosis?
If he is on the ASD spectrum, then he has autism.
I wish I could be more help to you.Is there a local autism organization? They may be able to help you find the right professionals to help you.
Best,
Chantal
I worry about my son he is
I worry about my son he is almost 20 months now but I worry something isn't right with him. Since he was a baby he was advanced crawling by 5 months walking by 7. He used to talk so much when he was 9 months until he was about 14 months then it was just oh dear and mama and dada. He has regained his words in the last month but that worries me. He will only play with toys that have wheels and only watch certain shows. All his cars have to be lined up a certain way and in a certain order or he panics. I could just be worried he is my only child but he throws these terrible tantrums for no reason and hurts himself. He doesn't let me comfort him and will keep at it for hours. I worry about him but his doctor tells me his behavior is normal and his father won't let me get him checked. What should I do?
