"A young female wellness advocate said that she is pressured to drink excessively when out with friends. She went on to tell me that no one talks about the calories people consume from alcohol. It is rarely mentioned as a cause of obesity. And no attempt is made to decrease alcohol intake to promote weight loss. “The reason,” she went on before I could ask, “is that drinking is a cultural thing. It is who we are, what we do, and people are not willing to change. They focus on cutting out sugar even though that has 4 calories per gram and alcohol has 7. ” "
So true. Alcohol is the elephant in the room Down Under. (I'm in New Zealand.) I know women who refuse dessert when out dining because of the calories yet put away enough alcohol to need a sober driver. They have a salad for dinner before pre-loading and then going out drinking further. And even though sugar is now the Big Bad, still nobody points out the sugar content in alcohol!
Both New Zealand and Australia have always had heavy drinking cultures but we only started to get fat when we started to eat like Americans and stop exercising. Take meat pies a yummy lunch staple. I am 48 and have seen them double in size since my 20s.
