40th Anniversary of the "est" Training

Forty years after the inception of "est," one of the original intensive consciousness seminars that launched the Human Potential Movement of the 70s, its graduates are reuniting at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on December 17th. Read More

I took the training 37 years ago in Los Angeles at the Biltmore. This is the best article I have read about the training. Better than some of the books even. Thank you Eliezer!!!

est reunion

As the guy who came up with the idea for this reunion I was shocked to see the resistance that Landmark, the predecessor to est, had in not wanting us to get together. As a former trainer, 13 years, I always thought the idea was to spread the good news not suppress it?
The purpose of the event is to allow everyone to reconnect with the excitement we all felt as grads of the training and to share what we did with our so called enlightenment. Landmark immediately interpreted this as an attack on their trade marks and alleged copyrights, I assure you none of this is true. Let the good times roll!

Great Article

Ted- as someone who is looking forward to this event I am bothered that you bring in a negative vibe about Landmark resisting this event. First, the idea of an est reunion is not new. I was at one two years ago in LA and Landmark was both aware of it and very supportive of it. I understand that they were also in support of this event until people involved with the event started saying they were going to present parts of the training. (BTW: I read about the training being presented at this event on either Facebook or on the est reunion blog. I don’t blame Landmark for being concerned about that, that is just basic business.

Anyway, I am just looking forward to seeing everyone and I say, put the past in the past.

Oh! and the original reason, I was going to comment: Great Article Elizier!!- I think this really tells the truth about the training, the work and all the people who made it possible.

Jerry, I have no negative

Jerry, I have no negative energy towards Landmark in fact support them completely in the work. Only reporting the facts and I can assure you no one was planning to present parts from the training, which by the way Landmark does not offer, its just hard to talk about what I have done in the past 40 years without taking about things discussed in the training. For example one of the things d I have come up against almost daily in the political arena is beliefs, and the lack of willingness to examine them. Is this me talking about the training, I don’t think so. What about in your experience ever see similar issues? Look forward to seeing you also Ted

Let the Good Times Roll!

We are going to forge ahead with transformation no matter what. Those who doubt that this is a good thing are on the side like Werner said: If you are half-assed, it doesn't matter which cheek you expose. We will forgive all who have doubts and want to keep things and people separate. We will celebrate our relationships. It's been a long time TED Long...hope to say hello. You are a great trainer and I remember you well...are you married? LOL

Never suppress your Aliveness...I don't and it's worked for me. I am starting to feel reunionized as i write this. Funny, how that works. I used to be on the Communications team and in charge of "est coffee seminars in Los Angeles." The minute you enroll the training begins. Let the Good Times Roll!

No WAITING - Register NOW!

P.S. Is there an outline of what we are going to do, purpose, intended results and all that jazz?

99th + 1

Hi Eliezer,

As one of those who's benefited from est (and now Landmark) I thank you for this nice 'executive summary'.

My life since est has been one of being great, then small, then great, small, great, small....

I got those moments of being great from my est weekend. Being small seems to be automatic and always freely available.

Being great is an 'upgrade' in living. I was 28 in 1974 when I bought my upgrade from Werner and my life is transformed.

Thanks, Werner. "May the Good Times Roll."

Thank you Eliezer for what is

Thank you Eliezer for what is quite simply the best description cum explanation of the est training I have ever read! The quote from Stewart Emory left me aghast! "The truth may set you free, but first it will piss you off". That was me! And Ted Long, who wrote here, was my trainer at that moment and this quote brought it all back! I never knew my reaction was to be expected! Predictable even! Thank you for this! And my thanks to Ted for seeing me through it 34 years ago! It has been quite a ride!

Truth shall Never Die!

Beyond all the opinions and explanations ...

Truth IS ... and miracles DO occur.

One the biggies is when a human being is BEING SELF in a body with a human mind. This has occurred occasionally in recorded earth history.

This did occur for a man named Werner Erhard in 1971.

What is so utterly amazing is -- not only did the occur -- Werner was also committed to and able to design a form of DIVINE THEATRE in which a very high percentage of people who participated in the theatre actually DID realize a oneness with and as SELF, at least for a moment -- a moment out of time.

(For me) 36 years later, SELF-Expression unfolds over time -- like a great Cabernet!

We are gathering to honor Werner, the est Trainers, the graduates, and the possibility for BEING that we are.

Regarding the official response from Landmark ... nothing else needs to be said ... another forgiveness opportunity!

forgiveness opportunity?

"Regarding the official response from Landmark ... nothing else needs to be said ... another forgiveness opportunity!"

Dr. Kamnitzer, what "official response from Landmark" are you referring to? You seem to be insinuating allot for something that does not needs to be said.

And can you also clarify, who has the opportunity to forgive who and for what?

Appreciation

thank you everyone for your kind response to my article!

NEWS FLASH

Sadly, apparently Landmark Education has made life so difficult for the folks wanting to do this event, that I've learned Landon Carter and Stewart Emery have pulled out.

Sadness for me ...

Landon was my Trainer both weekend, and, in my opinion, a true server of the Light.

I pray that he reconsider ... I would like him to come ... as an est Graduate ... looking together at where we are and the possibilities.

Thank you for the space to share what is arising for me now.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Kamnitzer

don't rush to conclusions

There are clearly two sides to this whole thing. This a recent post on the Werner Erhard Fans facebook page:

I am a proud est graduate, attorney, activist and author. I have participated for 38 years in our work together. Although I have never been on staff, I dated and befriended staff members and led guest seminars. So I have more than a passing interest in the conversation I’ve seen unfold over the past few weeks about the reunion. I also care about intellectual property rights because as an author, I’m not just “a guy in the diner” about copyrighted materials.

I love the idea of getting together with other est graduates, but I think something very important needs to be pointed out. I know for a fact that Landmark is supportive of reunions of graduates just like they were of the one that I personally attended two 2 years ago in Los Angeles.

The legitimate issue raised by many people, and apparently Landmark as well, was that this event was not simply a reunion.

The event organizers by their own admission, said they planned to deliver sections from the training (a program they don’t own) and they planned to market their own books, courses and services to people. (This could legally be considered a deceptive business practice.)

On top of that, they were deliberately promoting the event using what I imagine must be copyrighted materials and images, (including posting the 6 day video to YouTube while falsely claiming it was public domain). It was fun to look for myself in those videos but I thought, “Hmm. I don’t remember giving rights for just anyone to use it.”

I wanted to find out if it was true that Landmark and Werner supported the event and found out, it wasn’t true. Hmmm.

I also know, that if this was actually just a reunion, Landmark would have no issue with it. For some people to now try to portray this as Landmark as being controlling, is neither “authentic” or “transparent” and most definitely NOT TRUE.

It would be like someone taking my book, my workshops in promoting full force full impact self-defense and passing it off as something I endorse without my permission. I would not consider myself controlling by simply setting things straight and asserting my intellectual property rights.

I loved going to the reunion two years ago. And if and when I see that this event coming up is straight about what it is and isn’t, I’d actually LOVE to see people from that time, if nothing else to see how we turned out!

The 2nd Side

Yes there are. Here was my response.
Ellen is correct in most aspects. The new web site I believe reflects the spirit of simply having a reunion. I am personally responsible for it. I hope all of you who did the training ('74 Los Angeles Biltmore for me) share and participate. There is NO proprietary work being done...NO infringement as far as I can tell...NO hidden agenda. The simple fact is the reunion is now what it should have been all along. I personally apologize for any miscommunication or for misconceptions. As Rich Aikman (RIP) would have said to me, "This is an idea whose time has not come! Of course there would have been a few choice expletives thrown in! Now I believe is the time. To celebrate and reunite with no other purpose other than to have fun. So I ask all of you who like and respect Werner to see this as an opportunity to acknowledge 40 years of his making a difference and our own ability and willingness to get off it. Jamy Minotto.

Landon and Stewart

Landon and Stewart have chosen to support the est reunion by not being on the web site. There was enough controversy and charge regarding my initial design of the reunion web site it was agreed among all of us we would tale down the old site and create the new one, www.transformationreunion.com. The new site accurately reflects the wishes of the est graduates who have spoken out in support of having this reunion and in recent conversations and communications I believe I have, by taking responsibility, acknowledging my mistakes and asking for forgiveness, addressed any real concerns with Landmark.

Landon and Steward

Who said they will not be there?

i love you el, you have truly

i love you el, you have truly made a difference in my life.....and BTW, this is not the voice of my ego speaking since he does not know how to say i love you and believes that no one is really up to snuff....

Have Fun

Eliezar -- this is GREAT stuff. Back in the 70's all my pals were doing est. I got into Landmark in early 80s and have been much uplifted and somewhat enwizened over the next 10-12 years. I use the distinctions on-goingly. And this -- your report -- sounds like the same american zen wisdom.

Wonder why Werner isn't coming ???

In Landmark people often quoted Werner, such as: "Chicken shit promises bring chicken shit results."

You guys have fun!

Off-putting.

The reunion initially looked too much like it was going to, at least in part, be a podium for individuals in the consulting, coaching and consciousness business to promote themselves and further their own interests using Erhard's name and face and the EST name and the EST audience.

Not any more

The reunion will not be a marketplace or a podium to sell anything. Graduates of course may share what they are up to as this id the purpose of the reunion. To reunite, reconnect and rejoice. It is also a place to have one huge party

Reunion

During the Reunion, will any of the attendees who have a history of being est trainers ,Landmark Forum Leaders or WEA or LEC seminar leaders in the past be positioning themselves on a stage or at the front as "leaders" or authorities in the room and coaching people who attend the reunion, in any way whatsoever? Or will this dynamic be managed and avoided from happening?

And is this a for-profit event?

I would not expect any of the above at a get together where the sole intent was to share, reconnect, rejoice and party.

trainers

yes, Ted Long is the organizer of this and he is a former est trainer. I for one hope that he will take charge otherwise we have a room full of confusion. I want to hear what he has done and to answer my questions.

Ted Long

Ted is not the organizer of this event. Ted is attending as a graduate, just like all of us. There will not be a room full of confusion. Far from it. There is a graduate group who are taking responsibility for the structure of this event. The reunion is not a workshop, seminar or a review. It is a reunion. In a few weeks there will be an agenda sent out and posted on the web site. Thanks for your comments. Are you registered for the reunion?

For Graduates and Guests

The reunion is simply a reunion. Any graduate can share. Trainers were first graduates. Nobody is going to 'handle' anyone. The true leaders of the reunion are the graduates. We are creating an advisory or creating group to put structure into the event. We have received many great ideas. The event is not for profit or personal gain.

I am slightly too young to

I am slightly too young to know much about EST (it was an old new thing by the time I got to this country), but I know that you, Eliezer, have made a difference in my life by being a genuine person. If EST helped you get there, than thank you EST! Enjoy your private reunion with your good friend, and best wishes.

Inspiring article

Thanks Eliezer for a great article. I haven't done the training yet have many friends who have. Your writing here makes we want to give it another look - if my ego will allow :)

Gratitude

Thanks Eliezer...wonderful article that brought it all back from 34 years ago! I'm reminded of how I discovered my super human strength to drive straight through from Colorado to Pittsburgh for the first training there. Got home at 7am and left for the training at 7:30am and stayed up till after midnight that first night of the training....I was awake, aware, present right from the beginning and I would say I was asleep in my life before the training started. Over the years I've told everyone that EST was the 2X4 between the eyes that woke me up this life. Thank you Werner and my trainers...Stewart being one of them, Ron Bynum the other. My daughters were 6 & 9 years old when they did the childrens training which made my life as a Mom an easy one. I remember both of them saying to me, "I can't go out and play, I need to do extra work to keep my grades up!" Now, one is a Doctor and the other an Occupational Therapist. They became self-responsible as children and still are...that's what they got from the training - no victims here! My life has been magical for the last 34 years, I wouldn't change it for anything and if you do or don't have a reunion (I won't be there) but constantly am grateful to be awake.

!!!!

Great piece El. I think we should both read this again!

A Message from Landmark Education

At the heart of the staff and program leaders of Landmark Education is a profound appreciation, respect and gratitude for the millions of people who have participated in this work over the years. This vast community of truly extraordinary people has and does make an enormous and unique difference in the world.

While Landmark and its programs and services are organized to empower people in their lives and in what they are up to in the world, we intentionally leave to the graduates what they do with that in their lives and in the world. As such (and because we could not possibly support them all, and therefore would slight some graduates), we have a policy to not publicly comment on, let alone endorse, individual graduate projects and events. However, we are always delighted when we see and hear about graduates making a difference in their lives and in the world.

If not for the following and public statements that referenced Landmark, we would not be publicly commenting on this event either.

In the case of this event, however, it was made clear - including from conversations with some of the people directly involved in the event, as well as numerous calls from concerned graduates- that this event was intended to be something other than a “reunion.”

According to these people, and the event promotions and other communications, the originally planned event specifically targeted est and Landmark graduates and customers to generate a profit from the event itself and to promote other personal and business interests of some of the people involved in the event. The event promotions used numerous Landmark copyrighted materials and images and reportedly, proprietary course material was planned to be delivered in the event, without Landmark’s permission. In addition, the event communications used Landmark Education, est, and Werner Erhard’s names and images, as well as misleading statements from event personnel, to create the impression that Landmark, est and Werner were somehow associated with or endorsed the event, which was/is not the case. Were it not for the above we would have had no issue with a straightforward graduate reunion, as we have had no issue with such graduate reunions in the past.

Landmark appreciates the efforts of those people that have been involved in the event as well as other graduates who have made efforts to correct these matters.

Landmark has a responsibility and commitment to its customers, the graduates, stakeholders, program leaders and its staff-owners, who have fully invested themselves, to expand, make real, and fulfill on what originally started this work. Again, at the heart of that responsibility and commitment is a deep gratitude for the millions of graduates of this work – and we cherish, honor and celebrate ALL the people who have participated, supported and caused this work throughout the years.

Thank you.

Landmark's Comments

As I have gotten into this matter and started cleaning this up, I want to be clear about something. Landmark was never the problem. We made mistakes and did things that were inappropriate. That said, we have taken the actions to correct them. This event is now what it always should have been- a reunion.
