Too Sleepy To Wake Up in the Morning

I recently saw a teenager in my sleep clinic whose mother had brought her to see me because "she couldn't wake up in the morning". Read More

Suggestion

I've searched in vain through the whole page for an article that seriously undertakes the psychology processes involved in the capacity of waking at a definite hour in the morning; on the contrary, practically all the articles related to sleep disorders embrace the topics of incapacity to sleep. This was the only one that tryed to cope the incapacity to wake, but in the analized case is obvious that it is motivated by the habit of going to bed late at night. Even when I go to bed at what I consider "normal hours" (10PM), I am almost always waked up by hunger or by a body urgency, no matter how much I try to do it deliberately. Any suggested articles??

Dear Alejo,
I'm not sure I understand your question. Are circadian sleep/wake cycles what you are looking for? If so, I would refer you to papers by Dr. Mary
Carskadon and Dr. Charles Czeisler on this topic.

Inability to Wake

I too am interested in the help available for those who simply cannot wake up in the morning. My brother has, since a young kid, absolutely not been able to wake up in the morning on his own. Even with very intense attempts to wake him by others, it is about an hour long procedure in itself, maybe longer. He dropped out of college because he could not get up for class with no one there to wake him, and at 21 still lives with our parents though he fears losing his job due to missed work. Doctors he speaks with simply cast him off with "oh you just need a louder alarm clock" (He has the loudest, most obnoxious one money can buy, which includes a vibrating pad for under your pillow) or "you're just hard to wake up" (duh). Is there any help available for people like this? He does have some lifestyle changes that could help, but it doesn't seem that they would make as significant a difference as he needs, since this has been occurring for so long. Dr. Rosen, if you are able to even point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it!

Dear Corey, Thank you for

Dear Corey,

i still have trouble sleeping and waking up in the morning and im almost 21 years old. i go to bed every night at 9pm and sometimes have to take a sleeping pill to go to sleep. I have talked to my dr but he doesnt do anything. When 630 comes around i can barely get up for my classes and around 1 or 2 in the afternoon im ready for sleep. Even though i go to bed around 9pm. I have dealt with this for a very long time.
