Chicago Hosts Sibs in the City July 22-23

Siblings of adults with disabilities gather this month.

Siblings of adults with disabilities will gather in Chicago this month for a workshop and celebration called "Sibs in the City."

The two-day event, held July 22-23, offers siblings the opportunity to network, learn and socialize with other brothers and sisters of adults with disabilities.

On Friday evening, an open mic offers people the chance to share their experiences through poetry and writing.

Saturday's keynote address, "Food for Thought: The Dynamic Sibling," will be given by Linda Sandman, Clinical Director of the Developmental Disabilities Family Clinics at UIC's Institute on Disability and Human Development. Sandman will discuss family relationships through the lifespan and offer communication strategies for tough topics.

A disability pride parade and celebration will follow Sandman's presentation.

"Sibs in the City" is a project of the Sibling Leadership Network (SLN) — a national, nonprofit, volunteer-run organization of brothers and sisters of people with disabilities working to support each other. Members of the Fox Valley Sibling Support Network and Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters are founding members of SLN.
